I WAS TRYING TO BRING THEM HOME: DEVASTATED FATHER BREAKS HIS SILENCE AFTER LOSING ALL FOUR CHILDREN, SAYING HE WAS ONLY DAYS AWAY FROM A LIFE-CHANGING CUSTODY BATTLE

NEED TO KNOW

Brady Harmon was set to reunite with his four children for the first time in over six years

The children were found dead alongside their mother and grandmother in a Mechanicville apartment on June 23

Police suspect the grandmother, Amy Steadman, intentionally poisoned the family and left a handwritten note as evidence

A Utah man said he had been attempting to get custody or visitation with his four kids for more than six years when he discovered they had allegedly been killed by their grandmother.

“I wish there was something else I could have done legally,” Brady Harmon told WNYT. “But I went through everything I could, every thing that my lawyers could do. I just never thought that someone would go and do this.”

“You talk about the feeling of how do you prepare for this? You get down to almost the finish line, just absolutely cut your legs out from underneath you, and the only thing left to do is crawl across the finish line to bring the remains home,” he continued.

Harmon told News 10 that his children — 13-year-old Harper, 13, 11-year-old Hudson and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn — were going to stay with him at his home in Utah from July 1 to September 1 and “just come and be with Dad and connect with family they have not seen. Connect with additional family members they have never met.”

Harmon said he found out about his children’s death on June 23.

“There is no prepping for that whatsoever,” said Harmon, News 10 reported. “Let alone that you’re supposed to be there the following week to pick up your kids for your first parenting time in six and a half years.”

Harmon said he and the children’s mother, Sarah Myers, separated in November 2019, News 10 reported.

The children were found dead with Myers, 44, and their 64-year-old grandmother Amy Steadman inside Steadman’s Mechanicville apartment on June 23.

At a press conference on June 25, Mechanicville Chief of Police William Rabbitt named Steadman as the person suspected of “intentional poisoning” that led to the death of her daughter and her four grandchildren.

Rabbitt said one of the children suffered from fatal sharp-force injuries.

“At this time however the causes and manners of death are to all six individuals remain pending additional investigation and toxicology testing,” Rabbitt added. “I will say that there is recovered evidence inside the apartment that indicate intentional poisoning to include numerous prescriptions, and over-the-counter medications.”

Rabbitt said there was no evidence at this time to suggest “any outside individual” was responsible.

“Evidence recovered during the investigation, including a handwritten note and other circumstantial evidence, strongly suggest that Amy Steadman was involved in the deaths,” Rabbitt said.

Officers responded to the Harris Ave. home for a welfare check just before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, after neighbors grew concerned when they didn’t see the family who lived there for several days.
