“I FELT UNCOMFORTABLE — AND COULDN’T LOOK AWAY” — Matthew Macfadyen’s Most Distu:rbing Crime Role Is Quietly Hau:nting Viewers

Are you looking for a new crime thriller to add to your watchlist? Production on Matthew Macfadyen and Rachel Weisz’s new movie, Seance on a Wet Afternoon, is officially underway – and it sounds unmissable.

Adapted from Mark McShane’s 1961 novel, the film has been written by Emmy Award-winner Jack Thorne (Adolescence, Enola Holmes) and is directed by BAFTA Award-winner Tomas Alfredson (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Let the Right One In).

The story follows a struggling psychic who convinces her husband to kidnap a child so she can “discover” the boy using her supposed abilities and prove her powers are real.

This new production marks a fresh big-screen take on the novel, which was previously adapted in 1964. That version starred Kim Stanley, Richard Attenborough, Nanette Newman, Mark Eden and Patrick Magee. Kim earned an Oscar nomination for her role as Myra, so all eyes will be on Rachel to see how she puts her own spin on the character. And with Jack Thorne behind the script, expect plenty of gripping twists and turns.

A review by The Lonely Film Critics noted: “Rainy day or no, this is a film that can be enjoyed anytime one is inclined towards something dark and unsettling. Close the drapes, light a candle, and go wild,” while The Observer penned: “Séance On a Wet Afternoon is a very welcome thriller. It is modestly made and carefully localised, with a good nervy script by the director and more visual character than any English film of its kind for ages.”
