Bexley man Dennis Ballas, 89, killed in alleged hit-and-run in Sydney’s south

The driver allegedly told police he did not realise the elderly man was hit.

An elderly man killed in an alleged hit-and-run in Sydney’s south has been remembered as a “nice and quiet” person who was devoted to his wife.

Dennis Ballas, 89, was allegedly struck by a truck on Forest Rd at Bexley about 2.20pm on Thursday.

Police allege the driver failed to stop, leaving Ballas with serious injuries.

Passersby rushed to help before emergency services arrived.

He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

7NEWS understands Ballas had just left a nearby IGA and was trying to cross the road.

He lived with his wife Christine at the Scalabrini Village Nursing Home nearby, and was known to walk along Forest Rd every day.

Police said they have since identified the truck driver and spoke with him on Friday morning.

He allegedly told officers he did not realise the 89-year-old had been hit.

No charges have been laid.

Investigations are ongoing.
