One of Australia’s most notorious paedophiles has been released from prison after 25 years behind bars.

Disgraced magistrate Peter Liddy was jailed for the sexual abuse of four children during his time at a South Australian lifesaving club in the 1980s. Convicted paedophile Peter Liddy leaving an Adelaide remand centre.

The state government has launched a campaign to keep the 82-year-old in prison but as those court proceedings take place Liddy has been granted home detention under strict conditions after being released from a remand centre today.

9News can reveal the predator had been so anxious to re-enter the community, he’d been refusing to eat in jail for several days.

He emerged from prison looking frail and missing half an ear.

Liddy was a volunteer at Brighton Surf Life saving club where Andy Martin says he was preyed on from the age of nine, along with other victims too.

“I know what it’s done to me, so I know damn well what it’s done to them, and I’m sure their lives are bloody turned upside-down and in turmoil as well,” Martin told 9News.

Liddy’s life outside prison after a quarter of a century began with a visit to a Services Australia office before being bundled out a backdoor.

Should the government’s application for indefinite detention be refused, it’s also seeking strict and ongoing supervision orders to closely monitor his activities and movements.

The paedophile’s home detention address will not be made public, which is troubling for his victims who hoped he’d never see the outside of prison cell.

“Hell yeah he shouldn’t be out,” Martin said. Peter Liddy victim Andy Martin

“He shouldn’t be out. He shows no sign of remorse, he’s got no soul.”

The convicted paedophile will be electronically monitored and is barred from accessing the internet or stepping within 50 metres of schools or playgrounds.

“They don’t want other children to become his victims so they’re going to want some guarantees that the state will protect other people and yet, it failed to protect them,” victims’ advocate Michael O’Connell told 9News.
