Iconic Australian reporter Geoffrey Thomas died on Wednesday aged 74, surrounded by his family, following a long health battle.
The veteran aviation journalist had a long and esteemed career in the Australian media, appearing on many popular programmes over the years including Channel Seven‘s Sunrise, as well as shows on Channel Nine, the ABC and SBS.
Across his fifty-year career, Geoffrey developed a reputation as one of the world’s leading voices in aviation.
His death was confirmed in a social media statement by fellow Australian aviation journalist Richard Godfrey.
‘It is with much sadness I let you know that Geoffrey passed away peacefully on the 3rd of June. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones until the end of his struggle,’ Richard began.
‘Geoffrey was a great man and a good friend. I am devastated by the news of his passing, my heart goes out to his wife and family.’

He added that Geoffrey’s passing would leave a huge gap in the industry.
‘Geoff was much loved and greatly respected. He knew the aviation industry inside out and built a huge community around daily airline news. He will be sorely missed,’ he added.
The veteran reporter was also a presenter and worked on several renowned aviation documentaries, including Channel Seven’s The Hunt for MH370 and The History of Aviation / Great Air Disasters.
He also made regular appearances on Seven’s Sunrise, and was often their go-to expert for up-to-date aviation commentary.
People within the Australian media industry took to social media to pay tribute.
‘For many Australians, Geoffrey became the face and voice of aviation reporting. His calm, measured analysis was a regular feature on television, radio, and in newspapers whenever aviation made headlines,’ the Perth Observatory wrote.
‘He was trusted because he combined deep expertise with integrity and a genuine love of the industry.’
‘Geoffrey gave me advice when I was starting as a reporter and had to cover some airport development stories. Maximum respect. Hope those new wings come with the best in-flight meals, mate,’ added fellow reporter Jon Bassett.

‘A true gentleman, generous in sharing his wisdom, a charming, entertaining global travel buddy, always up for a laugh and adventure,’ added Luxury Escapes Global PR & Communications general manager Amanda Bolger.
He was long renowned for his expert and in-depth knowledge.
Across his career, Geoffrey received a whopping 47 international awards across his career, recognising his many contributions to the industry.
In 2020, Geoffrey received an Outstanding Achievement Award for his expert reporting on the MH370 disappearance in 2014.
Geoffrey is survived by his wife, Christine.
