An Ottawa father believed to have killed his two young sons before dying by suicide had been on probation after emailing his ex-wife that he would “kill everyone around” her, leave her “disabled in a wheelchair” and make her “a worldwide story.”

Before the killings, the father, Mohammed Al-Lami, also had repeatedly rejected opportunities to resolve his 2024 charges of threatening before it went to trial.

Mohammed Al-Lami, 40, is believed to have killed his sons, ages 7 and 12, at his home in Ottawa before he was found dead Monday in the Kemptville area. Officers responding to a wellness check found the boys dead, and investigators also linked the case to a fire at a dental office in Iroquois, Ont., where Al-Lami worked, according to releases from the Ottawa Police Service. At the mother’s request, authorities have not publicly identified the children.

According to CBC News, Al-Lami rejected the Crown’s offer to resolve his threatening charges with a one-year peace bond and instead represented himself at trial after sending the threatening email to his ex-wife in January 2024.

According to CBC, Al-Lami wrote, “I will kill everyone around you and your pimp … in a very wild and savage way. I won’t kill you. I will leave you alone, disabled in a wheelchair that you can’t move, even to visit your loved ones’ graves.”

He also wrote, “I’ll make you an example of the unfair justice system. I will make you a worldwide story,” according to CBC News.

Al-Lami’s ex-wife testified that the pair divorced in 2022 and had two children together. CBC News reported that she told the court he stopped paying child support the same month he sent the threatening email and said he had previously threatened her, though usually in Arabic or less directly.

“I was actually astonished because I was asking him for child support. I did not expect this,” she testified, according to CBC News.

She later told the court she reported the email because she worried about what might happen in the future.

“I just don’t know what can happen. I just didn’t want to live with the unpredictability,” she testified, according to CBC News.

After the Crown finished presenting its case, Ontario Court Justice Norman Boxall asked Al-Lami whether he wished to offer a defense.

“I don’t have anything to say, Your Honour,” Al-Lami replied, according to CBC News.

Boxall questioned why Al-Lami had rejected the peace bond and proceeded to trial.

“I don’t understand why you’ve done this trial,” the judge said, according to CBC News. “The Crown made you an offer which would have guaranteed you wouldn’t have a criminal record. You turned it down, for reasons I don’t understand.”

At the April sentencing hearing, Assistant Crown Attorney David Rodgers asked the judge to impose 18 months of probation, require Al-Lami to attend a domestic violence intervention program and order him to provide a DNA sample.

“We don’t have any evidence about remorse, we don’t have any evidence about insight, [and there’s been] no acceptance of responsibility, so I just have a concern in terms of future conduct,” Rodgers said, according to CBC News.

According to CBC News, the judge later granted Al-Lami a conditional discharge and imposed 12 months of probation, declining the Crown’s requests for treatment programming and a DNA order.

According to CBC News, Al-Lami’s defense lawyer successfully sought permission to withdraw from the case in December 2025 after telling the court the attorney-client relationship had broken down. Another lawyer appearing on the attorney’s behalf said Al-Lami had made allegations against his lawyer and threatened to report him to the Law Society of Ontario.

When Al-Lami complained that his lawyer had pressured him to accept a peace bond, Ontario Court Justice Julie Bourgeois expressed surprise that he had turned down the offer.

“If there’s a peace bond on the table, sir, you take it and run,” Bourgeois said, according to CBC News.

Clarissa Arthur, executive director of Nelson House of Ottawa Carleton, told CBC News that refusing to accept responsibility and blaming others are common warning signs in abusive relationships.

“Externalizing responsibility is a key indicator” of intimate partner violence, Arthur said.

CBC News also reported that investigators found a handwritten, multi-page note in Al-Lami’s home after the killings in which he blamed his ex-wife and the family court and criminal justice systems for what had happened. The note also named three people he considered corrupt, prompting police and a specialized Ontario Provincial Police unit to check on their safety.

The Ottawa Police Service said Thursday that several forensic examinations remain underway and that investigators will release additional information when those processes are complete. The agency said it is supporting the boys’ mother and, at her request, will not publicly identify the children.
