The disappearance of 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather captured the attention of an entire community, sparking days of intensive searches, emotional pleas from relatives and growing concern throughout Baton Rouge.
Now, newly released court documents are providing the most detailed look yet at what investigators believe happened in the days surrounding the teenager’s disappearance.
According to an arrest warrant, detectives allege that witnesses observed a tall male physically assaulting a smaller individual for several minutes. The warrant further states that a softer voice could allegedly be heard pleading for the attack to stop.
Investigators say they later discovered significant bloodstains at a location connected to the case, which subsequently tested positive for blood.
The warrant also outlines allegations involving surveillance footage reviewed by detectives. According to investigators, video evidence allegedly shows Maurice Parms discarding items including a mask, gloves and a T-shirt before later returning to retrieve them.
Authorities additionally allege that blood was found in areas inside Parms’ truck, including locations where investigators say he appeared to be wiping down surfaces.
Detectives believe Parms concealed Ja’Derrius’ body, disposed of evidence and later returned to move the remains to another location.
Based on those allegations, Maurice Parms has now been charged with first-degree murder.
Court documents also note that Parms had previously faced charges related to the broader investigation involving a minor.
The allegations contained within the arrest warrant represent the findings and beliefs of investigators. The charges have not been tested in court, and Parms is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
For Ja’Derrius’ family, however, the latest developments bring little comfort.
For days, relatives, volunteers and community members searched tirelessly through wooded areas, levees and open fields hoping to bring the teenager home safely.
