There’s a new comedy show on the block, and it’s already shocked viewers with a cameo from one very famous supermodel in her first scripted television role. The first three episodes of comedy queen Mindy Kaling’s latest series, Not Suitable for Work, dropped on Disney+ on 2 June, and fans are already raving that they “can’t stop watching”.

The show follows five 20-somethings living in New York as they navigate career ups and downs, as well as general life chaos. The third episode delivered quite the surprise when Gigi Hadid showed up on screen, draped in a chic fur coat to confront her on-screen investment banker boyfriend Bill Gibson (Jay Ellis) at his office.

The 31-year-old supermodel plays the part of furious girlfriend Catherine, who tears into Bill and dumps food on his work shirt in front of his colleagues. After saying her piece and casually giving away a designer bag to one of her boyfriend’s employees, the star leaves in a blaze of glory.

“She really crushes that scene, as well. She came in and cracked [the whip],” actress Ella Hunt, who plays new employee AJ, told USA Today about working with the model.

She added: “We have a bunch of really incredible guest appearances in this show, but because of the nature of our schedule, we weren’t really told in advance who they would be. In the case of Gigi, I turned up to work not knowing who was going to be playing this very fabulous character.”

Fans lose it over surprise cameo

“Imagine my shock when Gigi Hadid popped up on my screen,” one viewer wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after seeing the model’s unexpected role. “Gigi Hadid what are u doing here girl!” another surprised fan wrote.

A third commended the supermodel’s acting, gushing: “I loved Gigi Hadid’s participation, she did well.” One excited fan wrote in all caps: “GIGI HADID IS IN NOT SUITABLE FOR WORK?!!!? OMG.”

The series follows work-obsessed roommates Josh (Jack Martin), Kel (Nicholas Duvernay) and Davis (Will Angus) who live in the same Manhattan building as Abby (Avantika Vandanapu) and AJ (Ella Hunt). The five friends are all navigating life post-college and searching for success in their different career fields.

Only the first three episodes are currently airing on Disney+. The series will have nine episodes in total, with two new episodes dropping weekly.

What are viewers saying about Not Suitable for Work?

The first three episodes have debuted to mixed reviews from fans and critics. The show currently has a 50 per cent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned two stars from The Guardian who wrote: “Kaling’s scripts try hard but rarely shine, let alone dazzle as the Friends’ dialogue almost unfailingly did.”

Variety remarked that the initial episodes had “hints of a sharper show”. “The glimmers of a more biting, memorable take on young people juggling jobs and love in New York City throughout the nine-episode season end up being just that: glimmers,” the publication wrote.

Meanwhile, many viewers have claimed they’re “obsessed” and “can’t wait for all the rest” of the episodes to come out.

“Love this show so much already, cant stop watching,” one fan commented on Mindy’s recent Instagram post about the show. “Another hit by Mindy.”

“Great storytelling and talented people bringing a vibe that I personally want,” another said. “It is so enjoyable to watch and the cast has some chemistry straight up which usually doesn’t happen. We need another good one like this to look forward to!” someone else gushed.
