Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) is no stranger to going viral — but in the opening moments of Emily in Paris Season 4, it’s not for reasons she’s happy about. Instead of being at the center of another genius social media marketing campaign, Emily is the subject of a brutally honest TikTok that has Paris abuzz.
As you can see above in a sneak peek from the new season premiere, Emily’s rocky relationship with the family of her friend Camille (Camille Razat) — the on-and-off girlfriend of Emily’s Parisian crush Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) — continues with a not-so-flattering TikTok posted by Camille’s brother. The family blames Emily for Camille walking out on her last-minute surprise wedding to Gabriel.
“The show’s been away for a while, so we wanted a fun way to do a little bit of a recap,” creator Darren Star tells Tudum. “I love the character of Camille’s brother. I just love the way he framed the whole situation in his mind and comically interpreted it.”
In the Season 3 finale, Camille confront Gabriel about his feelings for Emily in front of everyone at the wedding as she explains why she can’t go through with it. This revelation upsets Emily’s boyfriend Alfie (Lucien Laviscount), who follows Camille out the door, leaving Emily and Gabriel to deal with the fallout.
Your boyfriend thinking you’re a cheater and bailing on you in front of an entire wedding party? Not great, especially because it isn’t true. The real reason Gabriel wanted to marry Camille right away is because she’s pregnant with his baby.
Of course, only Emily, Gabriel, and Camille know about the pregnancy. And Alfie’s been MIA ever since the ill-fated nuptials, so the viral TikTok is not helping. Only Emily’s best friend, Mindy (Ashley Park), has an optimistic read on the situation: Camille has “finally opened up a path for you to be with Gabriel!”
Emily isn’t too pleased with either option — Alfie (ghost) or Gabriel (complicated) — so she’s probably going to do what she does best, which is focus on work. But the team at Agence Grateau has seen the TikTok too.
The first five minutes of Season 4, Part 1 set the stage for some of the changes in Emily’s life this season. “Honestly, for me, this is the year that Emily really becomes the most vulnerable,” Collins told Netflix. “Emily feels more feelings — everyone feels more feelings this year. There’s more honesty and openness within all of the situations they’re going through.”
As Emily grows, she’ll also have to confront some important questions about her relationships with Gabriel and Alfie. “In her relationship with Gabriel, how does she navigate that secondary relationship with Gabriel and Camille, given that they’re not together anymore but she’s still having his baby? Is that a relationship that’s possible for her? And separately, can she repair her relationship with Alfie? And is that what she wants?” Star told Netfl. “Work also gives her new challenges. I think she has a bigger, more important role at the office, and Sylvie depends on her more; she’s taking charge more. The central premise of the show at the beginning was that Emily was this fish out of water in Paris, but that is not the premise of the show by Season 4. The show is called Emily in Paris, and Season 4 is about the evolution of Emily in Paris.”
