The body of a crew member who vanished from a commercial vessel overnight has been located in a tragic development following an extensive search operation in Port Phillip Bay.
Authorities confirmed the discovery was made by Water Police in waters off Frankston at approximately 2:30pm on Friday, bringing a heartbreaking end to the urgent search effort that had been underway since the previous evening.
In a statement, Victoria Police said the body has not yet been formally identified, but investigators believe it is that of the missing crewman, a man in his 30s who had been reported missing from the vessel overnight.
“The male is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be the missing crewman,” police said.
“The death will be investigated … but is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.”
The alarm was first raised around 8:30pm on Thursday, triggering a large-scale emergency response across Port Phillip Bay. Maritime authorities and emergency services quickly mobilized, launching a coordinated search effort that spanned both air and sea.
The operation involved multiple agencies working together under challenging conditions. Resources deployed included the Police Air Wing, specialist marine units, and support from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which provided aircraft to assist in aerial surveillance. The HEMS Air Ambulance was also on standby, along with several rescue vessels combing the bay in an effort to locate the missing man.
Search crews worked through the night and into Friday, scanning vast stretches of water in hopes of finding the crew member alive. However, as hours passed, concerns for his safety continued to grow.
The discovery of the body has now shifted the focus from rescue to investigation. While authorities have indicated there are no immediate signs of suspicious circumstances, standard procedures will be followed, including formal identification and a coroner’s report to determine the exact cause of death.
