Several people have died following a crash on the A66 this morning.
Cleveland Police said the collision involved a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat in South Bank, near Middlesbrough in Teesside
The incident occurred at around 3.39am this morning. The road is closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane. It will remain shut some time, police said.
TeessideLive reports a large number of emergency service vehicles remain on the scene.
A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: “Around 3:39am this morning, a collision took place involving a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 in South Bank.

“Sadly, the collision has resulted in multiple fatalities. There are significant emergency vehicles on the scene, and the road will remain closed for some time.”
Police are working to identify the victims and contact their families.
The force described it as a “quickly evolving incident” and urged members of the public to “respectfully avoid speculation”.
