Calling all period drama fans! There’s a new movie in the works starring two very exciting actors – and it’s set to be a must-watch when it hits screens.
A Night at Claridge’s (working title) stars Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey) and Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This) and comes from filmmaker Whit Stillman (Metropolitan, Love & Friendship).
Laura will play the lead role
The film marks Whit’s first feature since his 2016 release Love & Friendship, another period drama based on Jane Austen’s epistolary novel Lady Susan, and is based on Patrick Hamilton’s 1943-set novel, The Slaves of Solitude.
Laura Carmichael established herself as a beloved member of the Downton Abbey franchise as Lady Edith Crawley, so viewers can be sure they’re in safe hands as she steps into the leading role of Miss Roach in this upcoming story. Meanwhile, Adam Brody won hearts as the charming Noah in Nobody Wants This, so it’ll be exciting to see him take on a more historical role.
What is A Night at Claridge’s about?
The twisty drama is set in autumn 1943, when southern England is flooded with American soldiers ahead of D-Day. Miss Roach, a Londoner who is bombed out of her flat, moves to a boarding house outside the city, where she strikes up a new friendship with Vicki, a “vivacious” German woman, while also being bullied by the “preposterous” Mr Thwaites.

The synopsis reads: “The arrival of a happy-go-lucky American officer, Lt. Dayton Pike, offers escape, but her new friend Vicki likes him too. An intense psychological battle begins, leading to a violent incident and a death. Guilt and a fiancé she can’t trust push Miss Roach to the limit. But a mysterious man, an eccentric boss and an otherworldly elegant hotel lead to a resolution.”
Who stars in A Night at Claridge’s?
Joining Laura and Adam are Tom Bennett (Love & Friendship) and Susan Hampshire (The Forsyte Saga), but their roles are being kept under wraps at the moment.
