The duo then drove away in a waiting red Range Rover SUV.
The victim was not injured.
Police swarmed the area in search of the alleged shooters and soon after found the SUV on Macquarie Grove Rd in Cobbitty, about 5km west of the gym.
Two pistols, clothing, masks and cloned number plates were allegedly left behind in the car.
NSW Police’s famed Raptor Squad executed a search warrant at a home in Parramatta about 5am on Monday — almost four months after the shooting.
A 40-year-old man was arrested.

Just over an hour later, a 32-year-old man was arrested at a home in Burwood.
A 38-year-old man was arrested at a home in Silverwater about 10am on Tuesday.
All three were charged with one count of shooting with intent to murder, while the 40-year-old was charged with directing activities of a criminal group.
The other two men were further charged with participating in a criminal group and acquiring a pistol subject to a firearms prohibition order.
The 40 and 32-year-old men were refused bail in Parramatta Local Court on Monday and remain before the courts.
The 38-year-old was remanded in custody and will appear before Bail Division Court on Wednesday.
Investigations into the incident remain ongoing and police have called on anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
