The Got Talent star performed for the late Pope in 2019.
Count Susan Boyle as one of the millions grieving the death of Pope Francis today.

In the wake of the Pope’s death, we’re reminded of the time Boyle found herself in a position most performers only dream of: singing at the Vatican’s annual Christmas concert. In 2019, the church selected the Got Talent sensation, along with Lionel Richie and Bonnie Tyler, to perform for Pope Francis.
All three singers made the most of their opportunity, but Boyle triumphantly belting out “I Dreamed a Dream” and “When a Child Is Born” will stand the test of time as one of the most cherished performances of Boyle’s career.
By 2019, Boyle could perform “I Dreamed a Dream” in her sleep, after all, that’s the song that catapulted her to greatness.
However, her performance that evening — backed by a full orchestra — approach legendary territory. Every high note was heavenly, every run was flawless, and as usual, Boyle sang with the utmost grace and reverence.
Boyle is known for many iconic music moments, from her viral Britain’s Got Talent audition in 2009 to covering countless songs in concert and in the studio — but performing for the Pope can easily be considered her greatest accomplishment.
Susan Boyle remembers Pope Francis in an April 21 Instagram video
The passing of Pope Francis has clearly impacted the star herself. In a heartfelt Instagram video Boyle shared on April 21, shortly after the news broke, Boyle briefly eulogized the Pope, specifically mentioning performing for him at the Vatican five years ago.
“RIP Pope Francis. It was the honour and privilege of my life to sing for you. A man for all seasons,” she wrote in a caption, echoing the words she spoke on video.
Pope Francis was 88.
“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell said in a statement released by the Vatican early on April 21. “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and the marginalized.”
As a devout woman of faith, singing for the Pope was — unsurprisingly — a transcendent experience for Boyle. When speaking to Metro after the 2019 event, Boyle explained what it all meant to her, calling it “humbling.”
“To be at the Vatican meeting the Pope was such a humbling experience and to be asked to take part in his Christmas concert was a true honor,” Boyle said. “I have to pinch myself at how lucky I am and 10 years on I’m still having the most fantastic time with these incredible opportunities. I don’t and won’t ever take this for granted.”
