Kelly Clarkson’s Musical Director Reveals His Least Favorite Hit — and It Might Surprise Fans

Andy Cohen guest-hosted Clarkson’s talk show and asked her musical director Jason some questions about performing with the Grammy winner

Kelly Clarkson’s musical director is getting honest.

Andy Cohen guest-hosted the April 21 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show and asked her musical director Jason Halbert a couple of questions about working with the Grammy winner — including which of her hit songs is his least favorite.

The Real Housewives producer recalled Madonna playfully calling him a “little troublemaker queen” from the stage of her Celebration Tour in 2023 before proposing a shady offer to Halbert.

“While I’m here, this is my studio — kind of, maybe for an hour. So Jason, I’ll give you $20 if you tell me your least favorite Kelly Clarkson song,” said Cohen.

Halbert responded in jest, “Tell me your least favorite Bravo show.”

“Unpopular opinion,” added the musical director before naming Clarkson’s 2004 hit “Breakaway” as his least favorite.

Jason isn’t alone in his distaste for “Breakaway,” which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 following its 2004 release.

In a 2019 interview with Buzzfeed, Clarkson herself named the song as well as “A Moment Like This” as her “least two favorites” in her catalog.

“Breakaway” was originally released on the soundtrack of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement and later appeared on Clarkson’s second album, also titled Breakaway.

The song was cowritten by Avril Lavigne, who was originally set to record it for her debut album, Let Go, but ultimately left the track on the cutting room floor.

In a 2022 video posted to The Kelly Clarkson Show‘s Instagram account, Lavigne spoke about writing “Breakaway” and how it ended up in Clarkson’s hands. “Okay so I wrote this song, recorded it for my first album,” she said. “I did not use it, it went to Kelly, and she slayed. She did an incredible job with it.”

“I wrote this song at a very young age, I was leaving my small town, went to the city and took a chance, I took a leap of faith on my career — it was like, a very scary thing,” she explained. “Leaving my world behind and taking a chance, was what this song was written about.”
