Alex Kinsey and Sierra Deaton had viewers swooning when they competed on Season 3 of The X Factor in 2013. Not only did the duo make sweet, sweet music together, but their chemistry was off the charts — no pun intended.

Alex and Sierra met at the beach in 2009 and became fast friends, but their relationship didn’t become romantic until two years later. By the time they appeared on The X Factor, they were a full-fledged couple, and they went on to win the final season of the U.S. version of the show.

Are Alex & Sierra still together?

No, sadly, Alex and Sierra have broken up. They announced their split in September 2017 but said that they had actually ended their romance more than a year prior. In addition to ending their romantic relationship, the singers also confirmed that they would no longer be moving forward as a band.

In a joint statement on Twitter (now X), they wrote, “We may be artists, but it seems the next words are some of the hardest we’ve ever had to write. Many of you have been keeping up with us for years; you watched us go from two kids who met on the beach in Florida in 2009 to a couple who won a tv show and released albums and toured the country. We’ve had an awfully magical time with each other and with you.”

The statement continued, “Unfortunately things change a lot in 8 years, and though we didn’t tell the public, our romantic relationship ended over a year ago … But as everyone does know, we’ve been best friends forever and really tried to keep A&S going. However, we’ve arrived at a place where it feels better to branch out than cotinue making music together.”

The former couple released an album in 2014 and an EP in 2016, and admitted that their last tour as a group was “hard on [their] hearts.” They added, “Thank you to anyone who ever watched videos of us, bought a cd, came to see us bought merch, or simply enjoyed the music and listened and shared with friends. No band lasts forever, whether they dated or not, but we will cherish every memory, and our love for you will most certainly last forever.”

They concluded, “We have a lot of love for each other and ALWAYS will, and we are real people behind the screen you’re looking at, so keep that in mind before you say anything and please respect our privacy.”

What is Sierra doing now?

Sierra began pursuing a solo music career under the stage name Essy in 2017. She released her debut single, “Don’t Hurt,” in 2018. For the most part, Sierra seems to be focused on songwriting these days and has written for artists including 5 Seconds of Summer and Gnash.

She is openly bisexual and started dating 5SOS member Luke Hemmings in 2018. They got engaged in 2021 and he confirmed in January 2024 that they had gotten married. The two first sparked marriage rumors in 2022.

What is Alex doing now?

Alex has continued his music career as a solo artist, releasing his first single and EP in 2019. He also briefly performed in the band BoTalks.

Are Alex & Sierra still friends?

No, the two did not maintain a friendship after their split. In a 2018 interview with Billboard, Sierra confirmed that they don’t speak anymore.

“I really needed him once and I reached out to him as a friend and he ignored me,” she shared. “It was not something you ignore someone on. And if he couldn’t be a good friend to me, then I couldn’t hurt myself over that friendship.”

She also opened up about the decision to end the band and explained that she and her ex tried to make things work, but ultimately couldn’t. “It was pretty hard,” Sierra admitted. “We tried for a while, but then Alex released a song with one of our old friends without telling me. I was like, ‘Okay, well, there’s probably no hope anymore.’ It was like, ‘I’m out. I’m done.’ We weren’t going to sit there and fake a relationship and pretend to be happy if we couldn’t even be friends.”
