Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix after post-race technical inspections revealed both McLaren MCL39 cars failed to comply with FIA regulations concerning skid block wear. The ruling came hours after the chequered flag, dramatically altering the final race classification and reshaping the 2025 Drivers’ Championship standings with just two rounds remaining.

The issue was flagged during routine scrutineering when FIA technical delegates found that the rearmost skid wear on both McLaren cars measured below the minimum permitted thickness of 9mm, as defined under Article 3.5.9 of the Formula 1 Technical Regulations. The findings were subsequently re-checked in the presence of the stewards and McLaren representatives, confirming the measurements were even lower than initial readings.

According to the official stewards’ document, the skid blocks “did not comply with the regulations,” and the breach resulted in an automatic exclusion from the final results. The ruling applies to both drivers regardless of finishing position, intent, or performance advantage gained.

Norris had originally crossed the finish line in second place, while Piastri finished fourth, positioning both drivers strongly in the championship fight. Their removal from the standings significantly impacts the title battle at the top of the leaderboard. Following the updated results, Max Verstappen—who won the race—now pulls level with Piastri on 366 points, while Norris retains a reduced lead with 390 points ahead of the final two rounds.

The disqualification marks a major setback for McLaren, whose strong performance in Las Vegas had reinforced their status as consistent frontrunners late in the season. The team has not yet issued a full public statement, and while disqualifications of this type are uncommon, skid block wear infringements have precedent in Formula 1 due to the stringent enforcement of ride-height and contact-surface regulations designed to prevent excessive grounding and protect safety.

Skid blocks, mounted to the underside of the car, limit how low a car can run relative to the track surface. Excessive wear typically indicates the car was running lower than permitted—whether due to setup choices, track conditions, or structural factors such as high-speed compression. Even unintentional infringement results in disqualification, as the regulation concerns measurable compliance rather than intent or advantage.

The Las Vegas circuit, known for high speeds and long straights, may have contributed to increased wear through extended periods of low-ride-height aerodynamic load. However, the FIA document did not attribute cause or fault, only confirming non-compliance.

With the ruling now official, revised standings elevate other drivers into higher positions. Verstappen retains the victory, while the reshuffling of podium and points allocations will play a pivotal role in the final championship run-in. The outcome also places additional pressure on McLaren to respond and recover in the remaining races, as both drivers remain in mathematical contention for the title but face a significantly tighter points scenario.

The disqualification also fuels broader discussions within the paddock about the tight margins teams operate under when setting ride heights, particularly at new or unusually configured circuits. Las Vegas, debuting with a unique street-circuit layout, presented teams with uncertain data on bumps, asphalt temperature changes, and aerodynamic sensitivity—a combination that may have heightened the risk of exceeding wear limits.

Despite the setback, Norris and Piastri remain among the strongest performers of the season. Both drivers have demonstrated consistent front-running pace, with McLaren mounting a competitive campaign that challenged Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes across multiple circuits. Their form in recent rounds had positioned them as serious title contenders, making the Las Vegas outcome especially consequential.

While the stewards’ decision appears final, teams retain the right to appeal under FIA protocol. McLaren has not yet confirmed whether it will pursue further action. Any appeal would require presenting evidence that measurements were incorrectly taken or that procedural issues affected the ruling—arguments typically difficult to prove given the quantitative nature of the regulation.

For now, the championship moves forward with a tighter battle and renewed intensity as the season reaches its final stages. The Las Vegas weekend will likely be remembered not only for on-track action, but for a critical regulatory turning point that reshaped the title landscape overnight.
