James Bulger and the World’s Youngest Killers: The Making of Two Child Murderers

Liverpool, England — The brutal murder of James Bulger in 1993 remains one of the most horrifying crimes in British history. While the shocking act of two ten-year-old boys torturing and killing a toddler is seared into the public’s memory, less attention is often paid to the troubled childhoods of the killers, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson. Their backgrounds reveal disturbing patterns of neglect, abuse, and violence that may have shaped the path to tragedy.
The Early Life of Jon Venables

Jon Venables was born into a household marked by instability. His parents’ relationship was turbulent, marred by constant arguments, separations, and reconciliations. He was the third child in a family already struggling; both of his older siblings had developmental difficulties.
Though Jon himself was assessed as intellectually normal, his parents showered him with attention, often overprotecting him. Teachers described him differently: while his parents insisted Jon was a normal, mischievous boy who was often bullied, educators observed disturbing behavior. Jon frequently acted out violently, bullied classmates, and even engaged in episodes of self-harm.
Psychologists later concluded that Jon had a fragile psyche. His emotional instability and heightened sensitivity meant he was prone to sudden outbursts. Combined with an environment of family dysfunction, this created a child who was vulnerable, volatile, and susceptible to destructive influences.
The Troubled World of Robert Thompson
Robert Thompson’s upbringing was equally troubled, if not worse. He was the fourth of five children, growing up in a household dominated by his father’s violence and his mother’s alcoholism. The home environment was chaotic, with constant abuse and neglect.
Despite these circumstances, Robert initially appeared to be the “good child” of the family — quieter and less rebellious than his siblings. Yet he rarely attended school, and when psychologists reviewed his background, disturbing details emerged.
At the age of four, Robert had reportedly been sexually abused by an older cousin. Although his intellectual development was considered average, the trauma of abuse and the toxic home environment left lasting scars. Experts later speculated that his attempts to present himself as obedient masked deep internalized pain and anger.
The Morning of the Crime

On the morning of February 12, 1993, Jon Venables set out for school carrying his bag, but he quickly abandoned plans to attend. On his way, he encountered Robert Thompson, and the two decided to skip classes together. Both shared a dislike for school and a growing appetite for mischief.
They wandered to the Bootle Strand shopping centre, where they began shoplifting small items. Security footage and witness statements later revealed that they stole batteries, sweets, toys, cosmetics, and other trinkets. Their behavior escalated in boldness, dodging shopkeepers whenever suspicion arose.
Police investigations later uncovered that earlier that day, they attempted to abduct a four-year-old girl. The child resisted, screamed, and drew attention, forcing them to let her go. This chilling failed attempt revealed that their intentions were already disturbingly predatory before they encountered James Bulger.
The Encounter With James Bulger
At approximately 3:42 p.m., the two boys spotted James standing alone near a butcher’s counter while his mother was briefly distracted. One of them reportedly whispered, “Let’s get a kid.”
They approached James and coaxed him to leave the shopping centre. CCTV footage captured the three children walking away, Jon holding James’s hand. To passersby, it appeared innocent — as if two brothers were guiding their younger sibling. Several women noticed but assumed nothing sinister was happening.
On the streets, James became distressed, crying and calling out for his mother. Venables and Thompson alternated between soothing him with gentle words and lashing out violently. Witnesses would later recall moments where the older boys were seen hitting James, yet the pair deflected suspicion by insisting he was their brother.
Toward the Railway

The trio’s journey continued for nearly three miles toward the Walton railway tracks. Along the way, James stumbled and fell, further injuring himself. Still, no one intervened.
When they reached the railway embankment, the crime escalated into unthinkable violence. The boys beat James with a belt, struck him repeatedly, and kicked him as he lay unconscious. Even after he collapsed, they continued their assault, describing later that they were still “enjoying themselves.”
Forensic examinations later confirmed that James suffered over 40 separate injuries. Some of the most disturbing acts included the insertion of batteries into his mouth. Ultimately, the boys left James’s battered body on the tracks, concealing him with rubble. Their intent was to make his death look like an accident when struck by an oncoming train.
A Chilling Glimpse Into Evil
The backgrounds of Jon Venables and Robert Thompson illustrate a mix of childhood neglect, abuse, and exposure to violence. But the sheer brutality of their actions — deliberate, prolonged, and sadistic — left investigators and the public stunned.
How two children could commit such acts remains one of criminology’s most haunting questions. While psychology points to broken families, abuse, and emotional instability as contributing factors, the murder of James Bulger continues to be remembered less for the boys’ backgrounds and more for the monstrous crime they committed.
A Crime That Will Never Be Forgotten

The story of James Bulger and his killers is not simply a tale of two boys gone astray. It is a reminder of society’s blind spots, the failure of dozens who saw James in distress and did not intervene, and the horrifying reality that evil can reside even in the very young.
Decades later, the name James Bulger remains synonymous with innocence lost — and the killers, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, stand as chilling examples of how damaged childhoods can spiral into unthinkable violence.
