💔 “My Aim on This Earth Is to Find Jack”: Mother of Missing Student Accuses Police of Dismissing New Sightings

Six months after her son vanished during a night out in Bristol, Catherine O’Sullivan still wakes up every day with a single purpose — to find him.
Her son, Jack O’Sullivan, then 22, disappeared in the early hours of Saturday, March 2, after leaving a house party in the Hotwells area of the city. He had been studying for a law conversion course at the University of Bristol, having recently graduated from Exeter.
Jack never came home. His phone last connected to a cell tower near the Cumberland Basin, but no further trace of him has been found.
Since that night, Catherine’s world has been reduced to one long, uncertain search — one that has tested her faith in both hope and the police investigation she once trusted.
“I’m Jack’s mum,” she says softly. “And my aim on this earth right now is to find Jack.”
The Night Jack Disappeared
On the evening of March 1, Jack went out with friends for drinks before heading to a house party with fellow law students.
Catherine recalls messaging him at around 1am, asking if he was okay and whether he needed a lift home. “He replied that he was fine and was going to get a taxi,” she said.
When she woke up at 5am and realised he hadn’t returned, she says she “knew something was wrong”.
In the days that followed, police searched the river and surrounding areas. Volunteers joined, drones were deployed, and CCTV was examined. But the leads ran cold.
Jack’s family have since endured what missing persons experts call “ambiguous loss” — a unique kind of grief with no closure and no peace.
“If someone dies in an accident, you at least know what happened,” said missing persons specialist Charlie Hedges. “But when someone disappears, you’re left dangling — constantly wondering if one more call, one more message, could bring them home.”
“We Climb Fences and Jump Ditches”
Catherine O’Sullivan refuses to wait passively for answers.
Each morning, she maps out her next search route — sometimes alone, sometimes with friends — scouring the outskirts of Bristol for any clue.
“I go out daily,” she said. “My day is planned around which direction I’m going to look next, until I run out of areas I can feasibly check. We basically climb fences, jump into ditches… it gives me peace of mind to know that area’s covered.”
For six months, Catherine and her family have kept searching — through mud, rain, and heartbreak.
In the early days, she left the porch light on every night, hoping her son might one day walk back through the door.
Now, that light is off — but the search hasn’t stopped.
“Police Have Made Up Their Minds”
As the months have dragged on, Catherine says her relationship with Avon and Somerset Police has become strained. She now accuses the force of “dismissing reported sightings” and failing to take potential new leads seriously.
“They’ve made up their minds where he is,” she said. “That’s the feeling we get. People report seeing someone who looks like Jack, and it’s just brushed aside. They’ve decided on their version of events.”
Police have maintained there is no evidence of foul play and continue to treat Jack’s case as a missing persons investigation. In a recent statement, they said the case “remains open” and that all credible information will be reviewed.
Still, for Catherine, that reassurance rings hollow.
“When you’re a parent, you can’t accept that it’s over,” she said. “You just can’t.”
“I’ve Had Messages Saying Jack Is a Hostage”
Adding to her torment, Catherine has been targeted by online trolls and scammers, exploiting her vulnerability.
She has received fake ransom messages, claiming Jack is being held hostage or that they know where his body can be found. Some even demand money for information.
“I’ve had messages saying Jack is alive, that he’s a hostage, or that he’s been seen in another city,” she revealed. “As awful as it is, I can’t ignore them. I have to check, because what if one turns out to be real?”
These cruel deceptions have forced Catherine to tread a painful line between hope and heartbreak — knowing that most of what she reads is false, yet unable to look away.
“I put myself through hell,” she admits. “But I can’t ignore anything.”
Six Months of Silence

Despite offering a £20,000 reward for any information that could lead to her son’s discovery, no new clues have emerged.
The family’s frustration has grown as time has passed without progress. Still, Catherine remains determined to keep Jack’s name in the public eye.
“I’ll keep searching until I physically can’t anymore,” she said. “Because if I stop, who will look for him?”
Her story has resonated across the UK — a portrait of love, endurance, and a mother’s refusal to let hope die.
“My Aim on This Earth Is to Find Jack”

In a quiet moment, Catherine reflects on how life has changed. The once-bright home filled with laughter and plans for the future now feels suspended in time.
“Every parent thinks they know what heartbreak is,” she said. “But this… this is something else. Every day is a mix of hope and despair.”
Her voice breaks, but her resolve does not.
“My aim on this earth is to find my son,” she says again. “Until I do, I won’t stop.”
And with that, she returns to her map — another route, another field, another day searching for Jack.
