Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman Lead the Charge in ‘Special Ops: Lioness’—Paramount+’s Explosive New Spy Drama
Paramount+ is turning up the heat with its newest action-packed thriller, Special Ops: Lioness, starring Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman in a high-stakes battle against global terrorism. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the powerhouse behind Yellowstone, Sicario, and Hell or High Water, the series brings together adrenaline-pumping action, psychological depth, and a powerful exploration of women navigating the most dangerous corners of espionage.
A Mission Fueled by Secrets and Sacrifice
Inspired by a real-life U.S. military program, Special Ops: Lioness follows the lives of elite female operatives working undercover to infiltrate and dismantle terrorist organizations from within. At the center is Joe (Zoe Saldaña), a seasoned CIA agent and the fierce leader of the Lioness Program. She’s a woman caught between two worlds—trying to lead a covert war on terror while managing the emotional toll it takes on her family.
When the CIA recruits Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira), a scrappy Marine Raider with a volatile edge, Joe sees both potential and danger. Cruz is tasked with going deep undercover among powerful figures tied to terrorism—her mission: to stop the next catastrophic attack before it happens.

Overseeing it all are Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman), a high-ranking CIA official whose calm authority hides decades of personal sacrifice, and Donald Westfield (Michael Kelly), who ensures the program’s morally gray actions remain buried from public view.
Kidman and Saldaña: Women of Steel in a Man’s World
For both Kidman and Saldaña, Special Ops: Lioness represents more than another entry in the spy-action genre—it’s a showcase of female strength, leadership, and vulnerability under fire.
Kidman, originally attached only as an executive producer, was later persuaded by Sheridan to step into a pivotal on-screen role. “We loved Yellowstone. Loved it, watched it, ate it up,” Kidman said at the London premiere. “But I was a huge fan of Taylor’s film work in Sicario and Hell or High Water. When he said, ‘I want you as a producer,’ I was in. Then he said, ‘I can write you something small but pivotal,’ and I couldn’t resist. I wanted to say his dialogue. It’s so visceral, so real.”
For Zoe Saldaña, who’s no stranger to commanding roles in Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy, Joe’s character offered new emotional depth. “This isn’t about gadgets or glamor,” she shared in interviews. “It’s about what happens to the people who have to live with the consequences of these missions—the trauma, the secrecy, the loss. Joe is powerful, but she’s also human. She breaks. She doubts. And that’s what makes her compelling.”
A Sheridan Special: Brutality, Beauty, and Moral Gray Zones

Taylor Sheridan’s signature storytelling—complex moral dilemmas, flawed heroes, and gritty realism—runs through every frame of Lioness. Like Yellowstone, the show combines sweeping landscapes with intimate human drama, but here the battleground isn’t a ranch—it’s the global war on terror.
From dusty Middle Eastern deserts to sleek Washington D.C. boardrooms, Sheridan creates a world where power and loyalty are constantly at odds. Every decision comes with a cost, and every mission leaves scars. Viewers expecting simple good-versus-evil narratives will find themselves questioning who the real enemy is: the terrorists, the bureaucracy, or the people pulling the strings.
The Real-Life Inspiration
The Lioness program itself is based on an actual U.S. military initiative that embedded female operatives with combat units to interact with local women in regions where cultural norms restricted contact with male soldiers. Sheridan takes that foundation and expands it into a fictional CIA black-ops network—one that weaponizes empathy and deception alike.
“Taylor took a seed of truth and grew it into something that feels real, raw, and incredibly tense,” said Kidman. “It’s a story about women doing the hardest jobs imaginable, often without recognition or safety nets.”
A Stellar Cast and Cinematic Production
Alongside Kidman and Saldaña, the series stars Laysla De Oliveira (Locke & Key), Michael Kelly (House of Cards), and Morgan Freeman in a surprise supporting role as a senior intelligence advisor. The performances are as intense as the action sequences, with Sheridan’s trademark authenticity bringing a cinematic edge to every episode.
The production spares no expense—on-location shoots, authentic military coordination, and grounded stunt choreography lend Lioness the realism of a high-budget film rather than a streaming series. The emotional core, however, remains the human connections between women who risk everything for duty, even when the system fails them.
Power, Loyalty, and the Cost of War
At its heart, Special Ops: Lioness is less about warfare and more about identity and loyalty. What happens when devotion to one’s country collides with personal morality? How do women navigate power structures designed to exclude them? Sheridan doesn’t offer easy answers—only the haunting truth that loyalty, once tested, rarely comes out unscathed.
For Kidman, that theme resonated deeply. “Kaitlyn isn’t just a bureaucrat,” she said. “She’s someone who’s given her whole life to a system that doesn’t always value her sacrifices. I think a lot of women will see themselves in that tension—the need to prove yourself while knowing the cost it demands.”
The Verdict

With its stellar cast, taut writing, and unflinching portrayal of modern espionage, Special Ops: Lioness cements itself as one of 2025’s most ambitious dramas. It’s equal parts Mission: Impossible and Homeland, infused with the psychological depth that has become Taylor Sheridan’s trademark.
In a television landscape crowded with reboots and sequels, Lioness feels like something rare: an original, character-driven series that forces audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about loyalty, power, and the people caught in between.
Whether you tune in for the explosive action, the razor-sharp performances, or the slow-burn intrigue, one thing’s for sure—Special Ops: Lioness will leave you questioning who you can trust when everyone is undercover.
