Mark Harmon Returns as Gibbs in NCIS: Origins Crossover, Reflects on the Past, the Future, and What Drew Him Back

Get Ready: ‘NCIS’ Season 22 & ‘NCIS: Origins’ Premieres October 14

After years away from the franchise he helped turn into a global powerhouse, Mark Harmon is stepping back onscreen as Leroy Jethro Gibbs — and this time, his return arrives with a twist fans never expected. NCIS: Origins, the highly anticipated prequel series exploring Gibbs’ early years with the Naval Investigative Service in the 1990s, is colliding with the flagship series in a two-part crossover event airing Tuesday, November 11. And in the middle of it all is Harmon, once again inhabiting the character that has defined NCIS for more than two decades.

When viewers last saw Gibbs, he was deep in the Alaskan wilderness, having chosen a life of quiet isolation after leaving NCIS during Season 19. That storyline became the bittersweet send-off for Harmon when he stepped back from his role as series regular. But Origins quickly re-established Gibbs’ presence, at least narratively, by using Harmon as the guiding voiceover for the younger version of his character. Now, in a major franchise milestone, Harmon will appear physically onscreen again — offering long-awaited answers about what Gibbs has been doing in Alaska and what might come next.

The crossover’s plot is carefully constructed to bridge timelines. In the 1990s portion depicted in Origins, a case involving a mysterious death sends the young NIS team into a small, remote town. Decades later, that same case is unexpectedly reopened in the present day after a dramatic prison break, drawing the modern NCIS team back into unresolved secrets from Gibbs’ early career. The two eras converge, the past directly influencing the present, allowing Harmon’s appearance to serve as both a narrative anchor and an emotional reunion for longtime fans.

Speaking about his return, Harmon emphasized that his decision to reappear was driven almost entirely by the creative pitch brought to him by Origins showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal. “They came to me with an idea for Gibbs I liked,” he explained. Harmon has long been known for his collaborative but hands-off approach to shaping storylines, and that attitude remains unchanged. “I very rarely suggest things to either one of ’em,” he said. “They’re really talented… I just trust them.”

That trust stems from years of working closely together during his time on the “mothership,” as Harmon affectionately calls the original NCIS series. North and Monreal were key creative voices during some of Gibbs’ most memorable arcs, and Harmon credits them with understanding the emotional DNA of the character. “Those two were so special during the course of the mothership and my time there,” he said. When CBS began developing Origins, Harmon didn’t just approve of their involvement — he actively encouraged it. “I said, those two are the ones you got to go after.”

For Harmon, stepping back into Gibbs’ world brought a sense of déjà vu. He reflected on how the original NCIS took time to find its identity and audience, even though fans now see it as an instant success. “People think that show just jumped out, it was a hit right off, and it wasn’t,” he said. “It took years to develop that… It was a different time, different network, all of that.” Watching Origins evolve, he added, has reminded him of the earliest days of building the franchise into the phenomenon it eventually became.

Though Harmon no longer carries the week-to-week responsibilities of leading the main series, his presence remains foundational. He continues to narrate Origins, helping bridge the gap between the young Gibbs portrayed by Austin Stowell and the older, world-weary figure fans have followed for nearly 20 seasons. “For me, other than doing the voiceover, I just trust these two showrunners and what their ideas are,” he said. “That’s my job — to support that. And this is part of their thought of what is right for the show.”

Harmon remains cautious when asked about future onscreen appearances. The actor, now 72, has consistently expressed gratitude for the character but also an appreciation for the freedom that comes with stepping back. Still, his surprise return for the crossover proves he hasn’t closed the door entirely. Fans hoping for more Gibbs may have reason to be optimistic.

For now, Harmon’s reappearance marks a milestone moment for NCIS, uniting past and present in a way the franchise has never attempted before. With Origins expanding Gibbs’ mythology and the crossover offering new revelations about his life in Alaska, the November 11 event promises to be one of the most significant — and emotional — chapters in NCIS history.

Whether this marks the beginning of more appearances or a rare, meaningful encore, one thing is certain: Leroy Jethro Gibbs is not done shaping the world of NCIS just yet.
