Chicago Rapper Lil Durk Pushes to Have Murder-for-Hire Case Dismissed, Court Records Show

Chicago rapper Lil Durk, born Durk Derrick Banks, is seeking to have federal murder-for-hire charges against him thrown out, according to newly surfaced court filings that shed further light on a violent 2022 incident at a Los Angeles gas station. The case, which prosecutors allege involves a coordinated attempt on the life of Savannah rapper Quando Rondo, has become one of the most closely watched legal battles in the hip-hop world.
According to the federal complaint, the charges stem from an August 19, 2022 shooting in Los Angeles. Prosecutors allege that multiple members of Only the Family (OTF) — the rap collective founded by Banks — used two separate vehicles and acted together to “track, stalk and attempt to murder T.B. at a gas station located in Los Angeles.” The filing identifies “T.B.” as a target connected to the same location as Quando Rondo, though Rondo was not injured in the attack. His cousin, however, was fatally shot during the incident.
Federal authorities claim the shooting was part of a planned retaliation effort, allegedly tied to ongoing tensions in the rap community following the 2020 death of Chicago rapper King Von, who was closely associated with Lil Durk. According to authorities, Von’s death in Atlanta followed an altercation involving Quando Rondo’s entourage. No federal agency has publicly stated that Rondo was directly involved in Von’s killing, but the event significantly escalated public tensions between camps associated with both artists.
The government’s complaint asserts that Banks is one of five alleged co-conspirators charged in connection with the 2022 shooting, with accusations that include murder, murder-for-hire, and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death. Prosecutors claim that members of OTF coordinated travel, tracking efforts, and communication in the hours leading up to the attack, though Banks’ attorneys strongly dispute the allegations.
In recent filings, Banks’ legal team pushed for the case to be dismissed, arguing that the charges are based on insufficient evidence, mischaracterized communications, and what they describe as an overly broad interpretation of Banks’ association with other individuals charged in the case. Attorneys insist that Banks was not present at the scene, did not order or participate in any violent act, and is being unfairly targeted due to his celebrity status and public affiliations.
“The prosecution’s narrative is built on assumptions rather than facts,” Banks’ legal team argued in its latest motion. “There is no direct evidence tying Mr. Banks to a murder-for-hire scheme. The government is attempting to attach criminal liability to him simply because of who he is and who he knows.”
Federal prosecutors, however, maintain that the evidence supports their theory of coordinated action. They point to what they describe as intercepted messages, cell-site data, and associations within OTF, arguing that Banks played a supervisory or approving role in the events leading up to the shooting. They claim that the conspiracy does not require Banks to have pulled a trigger or been physically present — only that he allegedly agreed to or supported the plot.

Legal experts note that high-profile conspiracy cases involving artist collectives or music groups often hinge on the prosecution’s ability to demonstrate clear intent and coordinated planning. Defense teams typically counter that social affiliations, shared branding, or creative collaboration do not equate to criminal conspiracy.
“This case will likely come down to how strongly prosecutors can show that Banks personally ordered, supported, or knew about the attack ahead of time,” said one criminal law analyst familiar with federal conspiracy cases, speaking broadly about similar prosecutions. “If the evidence is largely circumstantial or based on association, the defense may have strong grounds for dismissal.”
The 2022 attack drew national attention not only because of the artists involved but also because it occurred publicly at a Los Angeles gas station and resulted in the death of a member of Quando Rondo’s entourage. Surveillance footage of the aftermath circulated widely online, prompting heated speculation and intensifying friction within segments of the rap community.
As the legal battle continues, both fans and industry observers are watching closely. Banks has maintained a high public profile through music releases, philanthropy efforts, and large-scale performances, even as the federal case has moved forward. Quando Rondo, for his part, has also faced legal and personal challenges since the 2022 incident, though he has not been charged in connection with the shooting that targeted him.
A ruling on Banks’ motion to dismiss has not yet been announced. Until then, both sides are preparing for what could become a lengthy and complex federal trial — one that may have broader implications for how prosecutors interpret artistic affiliations, street politics, and conspiracy in the modern rap landscape.
