Hollywood in Shock: Nick Reiner Charged with Murdering Parents Rob and Michele in Brentwood Home

BRENTWOOD — In a tragedy that has stunned Hollywood and the nation, Nick Reiner, 32, the son of legendary director Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the fatal stabbings of his parents. The couple, aged 78 and 70, were found dead in the master bedroom of their luxurious Brentwood home on December 14, 2025, victims of multiple sharp force injuries from a knife.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled the deaths homicides, with death certificates revealing the couple died “minutes” after sustaining their injuries in the early morning hours of December 14. Prosecutors allege Nick Reiner carried out the attack before fleeing the scene on South Chadbourne Avenue.

Nick was arrested that same evening near Exposition Park, close to the University of Southern California, after surveillance footage captured him at a nearby gas station purchasing a drink shortly before police apprehended him without resistance. He is being held without bail and faces special circumstances of multiple murders, which could lead to life without parole or the death penalty if convicted. A decision on pursuing capital punishment is pending, potentially influenced by ongoing mental health evaluations.

Rob Reiner, son of comedy icon Carl Reiner, rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on “All in the Family” before directing beloved films including “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand by Me,” “A Few Good Men,” and the recent sequel “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.” Michele Singer Reiner, his wife of 36 years, was a talented photographer whose work included the iconic portrait of Donald Trump for “The Art of the Deal.” She also produced several of her husband’s films and founded Reiner Light, a photography agency.

The couple met on the set of “When Harry Met Sally…” in 1989 and built a life blending Hollywood success with family and activism. Rob was a vocal Democratic supporter and advocate for social causes.

The discovery of the bodies came on Sunday afternoon when a massage therapist arrived for an appointment and got no response. She alerted daughter Romy Reiner, 27, who lives nearby and entered the home to find the gruesome scene. Romy’s roommate called 911 at approximately 3:38 p.m.

Investigators pieced together a timeline revealing tensions the night before. Sources say Rob and Nick attended a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien on December 13, where the pair had a loud argument. Witnesses described Nick exhibiting “antisocial behavior,” staring at guests and acting erratically, prompting the family to leave early.

Nick’s history of struggles adds layers to this devastating case. He has been open about battling drug addiction since his teens, experiencing homelessness and multiple rehab stints—18 by 2016. In 2015, father and son collaborated on “Being Charlie,” a semi-autobiographical film about addiction, which Rob directed and Nick co-wrote. Recent reports confirm Nick had been diagnosed with schizophrenia prior to the incident.

Nick lived on the family property at the time. After the alleged attack, sources indicate he checked into a Santa Monica hotel before his arrest.

In court on December 17, Nick, wearing a suicide-prevention vest, waived his right to a speedy arraignment. Defense attorney Alan Jackson described the case as involving “very complex and serious issues,” urging no rush to judgment. Arraignment is now set for January 7.

Siblings Jake Reiner, 34, and Romy issued a statement: “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing… The horrific and devastating loss of our parents is something no one should ever experience.” They thanked supporters and requested privacy, announcing a memorial service will be held at a later date.
