HBO’s Task Set to Return for Season 2: Mark Ruffalo and Creator Brad Ingelsby Back for More Thrills

This fall, HBO is bringing its A-game to TV with a thrilling new lineup, and topping that list is Task, a taut and morally complex limited series that has already captured the attention of viewers nationwide. Created by Brad Ingelsby, the mind behind Mare of Easttown, the crime drama has drawn praise for its compelling storylines, rich characters, and gripping atmosphere. But if you thought the drama ended with Season 1, think again—Season 2 is already confirmed, and it promises even more twists and turns.
Mark Ruffalo, best known for his role as Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, takes center stage in Task as FBI agent Tom Brandis. Heading a special task force, Brandis is assigned to investigate a series of violent home invasion robberies in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia. The city’s gritty, urban backdrop sets the perfect stage for a story that continually challenges the audience to question what is right and wrong. Ruffalo’s portrayal of Brandis—determined, conflicted, and driven—is one of the show’s most compelling aspects, making him the perfect anchor for this complex narrative.
On the other side of the law is Tom Pelphrey, who plays the mastermind behind the crimes. A family man with questionable motives, Pelphrey’s character is not just a criminal but a deeply human figure, struggling to reconcile his moral choices with his desire to provide a better life for his family. “I’m going to take their money so we can have a better life,” he says in the series’ haunting trailer. This line, delivered with raw emotion, encapsulates Task‘s central theme: moral ambiguity. The series presents characters who are neither wholly good nor entirely evil, forcing the audience to confront their own biases as the story unfolds.
HBO drama head Francesca Orsi recently commented on the success of Task, praising Ingelsby’s ability to balance character-driven storytelling with high-stakes drama. “We knew well in advance of its launch that we had a powerful drama series on our hands, but it has been so rewarding to witness the audience’s fervor and embrace of this show as it grew week after week,” she said in a statement. “Rarely does a writer balance humanistic storytelling with intricate, explosive plotting, but Brad Ingelsby is one of our industry’s greats, and we have no doubt he will strike as profoundly and addictively once again in Season 2.”
The show debuted in September to strong reviews, with its seven-episode first season ending on a high note the following month. The season’s finale left fans reeling, with several major characters meeting untimely deaths or fleeing the scene of the crime. As a result, the question on everyone’s mind is: What could Season 2 look like?
For one, Mark Ruffalo is confirmed to return for the second season as Agent Tom Brandis. His performance in the first season received widespread acclaim, and fans are eager to see how his character will evolve as he continues to investigate the complex criminal web in Philadelphia. However, despite the official confirmation of Ruffalo’s return, HBO has yet to release any information about which other characters or cast members will join him in Season 2. With several of the key players from Season 1 either dead or having disappeared by the finale, the landscape of the show will undoubtedly change.
The first season’s supporting cast included talented actors such as Tom Pelphrey (who played the mastermind behind the robberies), Martha Plimpton, Emilia Jones, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, and Thuso Mbedu. Each of these actors brought depth and nuance to their roles, contributing to the season’s complex, multi-layered storytelling. However, it’s unclear which, if any, of these actors will reprise their roles in Season 2, leaving fans on the edge of their seats as they anticipate what’s to come.
Task‘s ability to keep its audience guessing week after week was one of the defining factors of its success. Its twist-filled plotlines, rich character development, and exploration of moral gray areas made it one of the most talked-about shows of the year. Ingelsby’s mastery of intricate plotting was apparent, and the way he wove together the stories of law enforcement, criminals, and victims created a world where nothing was ever as simple as it seemed.
Looking ahead to Season 2, it seems that Task will continue to explore themes of morality, justice, and human nature. Given the events of the first season, fans can expect even higher stakes, more intense conflict, and perhaps even more morally ambiguous characters. With the show’s success and the talent of its cast and crew, Season 2 promises to be a gripping continuation of what has already become one of HBO’s standout dramas.
As the finale of Season 1 concluded, the story was far from over. The streets of Philadelphia remain filled with tension, uncertainty, and danger, and Agent Brandis’s quest for justice is far from complete. Whether or not Brandis can uncover the truth behind the robberies, or if he too will be pulled deeper into the moral chaos that surrounds him, remains to be seen.

For now, viewers will have to wait for more details from HBO, but one thing is certain: Task’s return is one of the most anticipated events of the upcoming TV season. As fans eagerly await new developments, they can rest assured that Brad Ingelsby’s unpredictable storytelling and Mark Ruffalo’s gripping performance will continue to lead the charge in this dark, twist-filled drama.
Stay tuned for updates on Season 2—because Task is far from finished.
