From Thunderous Cheers to Deafening Silence: Mr P’s Surprising Return to Jos After 20 Years Sparks Emotional Debate

Residents of Jos were left stunned on Tuesday after popular Nigerian music star Mr P of the legendary duo P-Square allegedly made a quiet return to his hometown—only to be met with an unexpected wave of public indifference.
According to eyewitness accounts circulating widely on social media, Mr P was seen riding through parts of the city in a convoy, standing through his sunroof, waving energetically and calling out to passersby. In a scene that sharply contrasted with his glory days, most people reportedly continued with their daily routines—walking, driving, buying and selling—barely acknowledging the presence of the once-uncontested pop icon.
Just over a decade ago, any appearance by the P-Square twins in Jos would bring traffic to a complete standstill. Fans would line the streets, climb rooftops, and flood the roads just to catch a glimpse of the megastars who dominated African music charts and airwaves. Their arrival typically meant blocked roads, screaming fans, police escorts, and near-chaotic scenes of celebration.
This time, however, the streets stayed open. The cheers never came.
A short video clip allegedly recorded during the visit has since gone viral, triggering intense reactions across social media platforms. While some viewers expressed shock and sadness at what they described as a “humbling moment,” others argued that the situation highlights how fame is fleeting and public attention constantly shifts.
“This is a painful reminder that nothing truly lasts forever,” one social media user wrote. “At a point in time, P-Square were the biggest thing in Africa. Today, the streets couldn’t pause for a minute.”
Another user countered the narrative, suggesting that the incident may have been exaggerated: “People are busy trying to survive. It doesn’t mean they don’t respect him. Times are hard. Not everybody can stop to cheer again.”
Mr P, born Peter Okoye, rose to continental and international fame in the early 2000s alongside his identical twin brother Paul (Rudeboy). P-Square became one of Africa’s most successful music acts, selling millions of records and winning numerous awards with hit songs like Do Me, No One Like You, Bizzy Body, and Chop My Money.

However, years of internal conflict eventually led to the group’s highly publicized split in 2017 before their unlikely reunion in 2021. Since then, both brothers have pursued solo and joint projects with varying degrees of commercial success.
Cultural analysts say the Jos incident reflects broader changes in Nigerian pop culture and celebrity worship.
“Back then, stars were few, and attention was concentrated,” said entertainment analyst Musa Lawal. “Today, social media has created thousands of influencers and musicians fighting for relevance daily. The audience is distracted, overwhelmed, and no longer mobilizes physically the way it used to.”
Others believe the reduced reactions could also be due to security concerns, population changes, and economic pressures facing everyday Nigerians.
“People are worried about fuel prices, food inflation, rent, and survival,” said Plateau-based journalist Chinyere Okafor. “Stopping traffic to celebrate a celebrity is no longer a priority for many.”
Despite the viral narrative, neither Mr P nor his management team has officially reacted to the reports as of the time of filing this story. Whether the silence was intentional, misunderstood, or exaggerated by online commentary remains unclear.
Still, the moment has sparked a national conversation about relevance, legacy, and the unpredictable nature of fame. For many fans, it was not just about one artist being ignored—it was a powerful metaphor for how swiftly the spotlight can shift in the entertainment industry.

Once adored to the point of shutting down entire cities, now driving freely through his own hometown, waving into near silence—the scene has left many Nigerians reflecting on life’s harsh but honest lesson: popularity may be loud, but time is louder.
