Sydney Mourns After Deadly Terror Attack at Bondi Beach Hanukkah Event

Sydney — New South Wales Health Minister Ryan Park described the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach as “absolutely horrendous” in emotional comments on December 15, 2025, as the death toll stood at least 16, with uncertainty whether it included one of the shooters. The assault on the “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration has shaken Australia, marking the nation’s worst mass shooting in decades and highlighting rising concerns over antisemitism.

Park, speaking on 9 News, emphasized the broader impact: “This is absolutely horrendous for the community broadly, but particularly the Jewish community, but for Australians.” He revealed that 38 people had presented with injuries, ranging from serious to critical, including four children transferred to Sydney Children’s Hospital. Two police officers were among the wounded.

The minister recounted meeting paramedics and first responders alongside Premier Chris Minns the previous night: “What we saw last night was the worst of humanity, but at the same time, the very best of humanity.” Park shared the personal toll, noting the difficulty explaining the events to his own children, aged 11 and 15: “To try and explain it last night to my own children… it’s heartbreaking.”

Approximately 100 ambulance personnel, including specialist units and general paramedics, responded to the scene on December 14 evening. The attack occurred around 6:45 p.m. during the first night of Hanukkah, when hundreds—possibly up to 1,000—gathered at Archer Park for the Chabad-hosted event featuring a menorah lighting, donuts, and family activities.

Two gunmen emerged from a silver hatchback and opened fire, targeting the Jewish crowd. At least one Israeli citizen and Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a Chabad assistant rabbi and event organizer, were among the deceased. Viral footage captured bystander Ahmed al-Ahmed, a local fruit shop owner, heroically disarming one gunman, an act praised by Minns as saving countless lives.

Authorities have established a Public Information and Inquiry Centre (PIIC) for updates on affected individuals. NSW Police announced plans for a memorial site, with details to follow. The area remains an active crime scene, with suspicious devices defused in a vehicle.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned it as a “targeted attack against Jewish Australians,” declaring it a terrorist incident. Global leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and King Charles III, expressed outrage and solidarity. The incident follows heightened antisemitic tensions in Australia since the Gaza conflict escalated.

As investigations probe motives and potential accomplices, the community grapples with grief. Security has been bolstered at Jewish sites nationwide. Park’s words encapsulate the dual reality: profound horror amid acts of bravery and resilience.
