It took decades to bring Gabriel García Márquez’s seminal novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien Años de Soledad), to the screen. But those who want to watch the story’s epic conclusion will have to wait a little longer. While the first half of Netflix’s series adaptation is now streaming, the latter half will follow at a later date.

Márquez’s book, which was first published in 1967, follows the Buendía family, starting with patriarch José Arcadio and matriarch Úrsula Iguarán, as they establish the fictional town of Macondo in Colombia. A generations-spanning saga imbued with magical realism, political conflict, and family drama, it’s no wonder the Nobel Prize-winning author was hesitant to adapt the book in the first place.
Márquez’s agent, Carmen Balcells, told Vanity Fair, “He never wanted a film made of One Hundred Years.” His editing partner, Ignacio López-Calvo, suggested that it’s because Márquez wanted audience to read and experience the story themselves. Per Vanity Fair, López-Calvo “said it would take 100 hours to tell the story properly”—Netflix’s version will be about 16.

Márquez’s family asked that “the series be as long as the story required, that it be in Spanish, and that it be filmed in Colombia,” according to the magazine. Sure enough, the author’s sons are producers on the series, and it is indeed spoken in Spanish and set in Colombia.
“We’ve done it with love and respect for the novel, with the support of an exceptional technical and human team,” Laura Mora, who directs episodes in part 1 alongside Alex García López, told Netflix’s Tudum. Sure enough, the result is an immersive, lush, and moving epic.
Part 1 ends with heartbreaking losses for the Buendía family and a “monstrous” turn for Colonel Aureliano. Read on to find out when you’ll be able to watch what happens next.
When does One Hundred Years of Solitude part 2 come out?
Netflix has not yet released a date. Unlike recent two-part releases, like Bridgerton season 3 or Emily in Paris season 4, One Hundred Years of Solitude only had a premiere date for its first half. We’ll have to keep waiting for a premiere date for part 2.
How many more episodes will there be?
Expect eight more new episodes. The series is confirmed to have 16 episodes total.
