A worker from NAB‘s fraud division is understood to have taken his own life by plunging from the roof of the bank’s Melbourne headquarters in front of his colleagues.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, is believed to have fallen from the top of the 14-storey building on Bourke Street in Docklands, near the city’s CBD, just after 2pm on Thursday.

Police were called to the scene and are not treating the death as suspicious.

Employees have been offered counselling services.

According to reports in September, NAB planned to fire about 400 staff members to ‘simplify team structures’.

Daily Mail understands a number of those workers have been made redundant within the last few weeks.

A NAB spokesperson would not comment on the death.

Referring to the redundancies, a NAB spokesperson said in September: ‘We’re simplifying the way we work and how we’re structured to deliver the best experience we can for our customers.’

‘While some roles are no longer required or may move location, we are also creating new roles across all locations as necessary, to ensure we are set up for success and can deliver better outcomes.’

They also said impacted workers would be provided with support, including redeployment options and career transition services.

Some NAB employees told business commentator The Aussie Corporate there had been a ‘revolving door of consultants’ ahead of a potential restructure.

The bank’s $300million Docklands building was designed to ‘bolster employees’ health and well-being’, according to a NAB press release.

The office block can accommodate 5,600 employees, and features ‘parent rooms, large studios for exercise, multi-faith rooms, and spaces for quiet contemplation’.

At maximum capacity, the building will be able to host 5,600 employees.

The rooftop features a ‘Feng Shui-inspired tranquil rooftop garden’, which includes timber decking, custom furniture, hanging baskets and bamboo plants, an outdoor kitchen complete with a herb garden and meals area.

Victoria Police confirmed it responded to the incident in the CBD on Thursday afternoon.

‘Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of a man in Docklands on March 5,’ a police statement read.

‘The body of a man, who is yet to be formally identified, was located on Bourke Street about 2pm.’

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
