Country music fans are buzzing after Morgan Wallen dropped his highly-anticipated collaboration with Post Malone, “I Ain’t Coming Back,” a track that blends country and rock in true Wallen fashion. In an exclusive interview clip shared as part of his album countdown on Spotify, Wallen opened up about the making of the song, which features on both Post Malone’s country album F-1 Trillion and Wallen’s upcoming album I’m the Problem.
A Song Born From Collaboration
Wallen, 31, reflected on how the collaboration came to life during Post Malone’s album recording. “This was written during the time when Post was working on his album,” Wallen shared. “I’ve always loved this song, and I told him, ‘Hey, if you don’t put this on your album, then I’m gonna put it on mine.’” Wallen revealed that, in the end, Post Malone chose to include another track, “I Had Some Help,” on his album, which became a smash hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. “So, he ended up putting it on his record,” Wallen added.
But Wallen’s collaboration with Post Malone didn’t stop there. He decided to keep “I Ain’t Coming Back” for his own album, I’m the Problem, feeling it fit perfectly with the personal themes he wanted to explore.
The Deep Meaning Behind ‘I Ain’t Coming Back’
“I Ain’t Coming Back,” released on April 18, is an emotionally-charged song that dives into themes of regret and transformation. Wallen’s heartfelt lyrics reflect his own journey and the complexity of love and loss, and the chorus makes a striking claim:
“Cause the night I said, ‘I’m leavin’, I turned into Richard Petty / Broke my heart and I got even in my ’97 Chevy / Now I’m walkin’ on this water, mixed with Johnnie Walker Black / There’s a lot of reasons I ain’t Jesus, but the main one is that I ain’t comin’ back.”
Wallen later shared how, as a Christian, he often weaves subtle spiritual references into his music, and “I Ain’t Coming Back” is no exception. “I love what it says, there’s a lot of cool imagery,” he said, adding that his faith plays a role in how he approaches songwriting.
Wallen’s New Album and Star-Studded Collaborations
With I’m the Problem set for release on May 16, fans can expect more of Wallen’s introspective and raw lyrics. The album promises to showcase his most vulnerable side, exploring deeper themes and new musical directions. “We were trying to dig deep on things and trying to find new angles,” Wallen shared about the process. “I feel like we did that. I feel like there’s a lot of stuff that I haven’t said in this record, which I’m really, really proud of.”
In addition to Post Malone, Wallen’s album will feature collaborations with other major artists, including Eric Church, ERNEST, HARDY, and even Tate McRae, marking his first-ever collaboration with a female artist. The track with McRae is just one of the many surprises fans can look forward to when I’m the Problem drops next month.
Before the album’s full release, Wallen has already teased several tracks, including “Just in Case,” “I’m the Problem,” “Love Somebody,” “Smile,” “Lies Lies Lies,” and “I’m a Little Crazy.”
