For Martin Henderson, portraying Jack Sheridan in Virgin River has meant far more than just another role in a long and successful acting career. In a recent interview, the seasoned actor opened up about the emotional depth of his experience on the Netflix hit series—particularly when it comes to working alongside co-star Alexandra Breckenridge.

Henderson didn’t mince words: “Working with Alexandra has been one of the happiest experiences of my life,” he said, smiling. “It’s not every day that you get to work with someone who lifts you both professionally and personally.”
Chemistry That Goes Beyond the Screen
From the moment Virgin River debuted, fans around the world were captivated by the romantic tension and raw emotional chemistry between Henderson’s Jack and Breckenridge’s Mel Monroe. But what audiences see on screen, Henderson revealed, is just the tip of the iceberg.
“There’s a trust there,” he explained. “Alex and I trust each other completely. We know how to give and take in scenes. We don’t have to force the emotion because it’s already there in the way we work.”
He added that this trust allows them to explore the complexities of love, grief, and resilience that define the Jack-and-Mel relationship—without fear of judgment or awkwardness. “It makes it easy to go deep,” Henderson said. “To be vulnerable in a scene and know that the other person is right there with you—that’s rare.”
More Than Acting: A Friendship Built on Respect

Off-screen, Henderson and Breckenridge have developed a close friendship rooted in mutual respect. According to crew members on set, the two stars often share a natural rhythm in their performances, a connection that translates to long conversations between takes and supportive banter that lightens even the most dramatic filming days.
“She has this incredible combination of strength and softness,” Henderson said of his co-star. “She brings such nuance to Mel—so much grace and power. Watching her work makes me want to be better every day.”
Their genuine camaraderie has helped maintain the emotional consistency of Virgin River through six seasons—and will likely continue to do so in the upcoming Season 7.
Shared Growth and Unforgettable Moments
For Henderson, being part of Virgin River has also meant tremendous personal growth. He admitted that filming emotionally heavy scenes with Breckenridge pushed him as an actor in ways he hadn’t expected.
“There were scenes where we had to go to incredibly painful places—things like trauma, heartbreak, even loss,” he said. “And Alex was always there. She’s present in the moment. And she brings out the truth in everything.”
One moment in particular stands out: a Season 4 scene where Mel reveals a deeply emotional truth to Jack. “It wasn’t easy to film,” Henderson recalled. “But we both felt it. We didn’t just act—we lived that moment together. And I think the audience felt that too.”
Fans Feel the Connection
Viewers have long praised the natural chemistry between Jack and Mel, often commenting on how “real” their relationship feels. Fan forums are filled with appreciation posts, fan art, and video tributes to the couple—many of which highlight not just the romance, but the emotional depth of their connection.
Now, hearing that the actors themselves feel similarly moved only adds to the fandom’s appreciation.
“Knowing that Martin actually loves working with Alex makes it even more magical,” one fan posted on Twitter.
“No wonder the show feels so authentic,” another added. “You can’t fake that kind of connection.”
Looking Ahead to Season 7
As Virgin River prepares to return for its much-anticipated seventh season, Henderson says he’s excited to see where the journey goes next—and grateful he gets to continue it with Breckenridge by his side.
“We’re telling a love story,” he said. “But more than that, we’re telling a story about healing and starting over. And I can’t think of a better person to tell that story with than Alex.”
And while he’s played doctors, lovers, and action heroes throughout his career, it’s clear that this role—and this partnership—hold a special place in his heart.
“Some roles change your career,” Martin Henderson said. “But working with Alexandra Breckenridge? That changed my life.”
