HERO BOY’S 4-HOUR SWIM TO SAVE FAMILY: WORKSAFE PROBES RESORT AFTER NEAR-FATAL DRIFT
QUINDALUP, WA — A dream family vacation in Western Australia’s picturesque South West turned into a harrowing battle for survival Friday, as a mother and her three children were swept 14 kilometers out into the unforgiving Indian Ocean. Now, state safety regulators are demanding answers from the resort that allowed the family to head into “treacherous” conditions.

WorkSafe WA confirmed today it has launched “initial enquiries” into a local hotel’s equipment hire protocols after the Appelbee family was left clinging to an inflatable paddleboard in the dark, miles from the Geographe Bay shoreline.
A Mother’s Impossible Choice
The nightmare began on Friday afternoon when Joanne Appelbee and her three children—Austin (13), Beau (12), and Grace (8)—rented a kayak and two inflatable paddleboards. What started as a calm paddle near the Quindalup shore quickly turned deadly when fierce offshore winds—common to the region but notoriously deceptive—began dragging their light inflatable vessels away from the beach.
Despite their desperate efforts to paddle back, the family was soon over a kilometer out, with the shoreline shrinking into a thin line. As the sun began to dip and the swell rose, Joanne realized they were being pulled into the open ocean.
It was then she made what she described as “one of the hardest decisions a mother could ever face.”
“The wind was too strong for the little ones,” a tearful Joanne told reporters. “I looked at Austin and knew he was our only hope. I told him he had to go. I had to let my son swim away into the ocean, not knowing if I’d ever see him again.”
The Marathon Swim of Austin Appelbee
Thirteen-year-old Austin stripped off his life vest to reduce drag and plunged into the tumultuous, white-capped waters. For four agonizing hours, the teenager battled fatigue, stinging salt, and the psychological terror of the deep.
As night fell, Austin finally felt sand beneath his feet near the Abbey boat ramp. Exhausted and shivering from the early stages of hypothermia, he stumbled onto the beach and alerted a group of locals, who immediately called 000.
Midnight Rescue in the Dark

The recovery effort was a massive coordination between the Water Police, Volunteer Marine Rescue, and a rescue helicopter. Using thermal imaging, search crews scanned the black expanse of Geographe Bay.
At approximately 8:30 PM, the helicopter’s spotlight caught a flash of movement. Joanne, Beau, and Grace were found huddling together, clinging to a single inflatable paddleboard that served as their only life raft. They were 14 kilometers (9 miles) offshore—so far out that the lights of the coast were barely visible.
“They were terrified, they were cold, but they were together,” said one of the rescue divers. “That boy’s swim saved their lives. Without that alarm being raised when it was, we would have been searching for a needle in a haystack come morning.”
Investigation: Was the Hotel Negligent?
The focus has now shifted to the unidentified hotel that facilitated the rental. WorkSafe WA is investigating whether the resort provided adequate safety briefings or checked weather warnings before handing over the equipment.
On the day of the incident, local weather stations had recorded wind gusts exceeding 25 knots—conditions that experts say are “strictly off-limits” for inflatable watercraft.
The investigation will look into:
Whether life jackets were properly fitted and required for all guests.
If the hotel monitored the family’s location.
Whether the hotel ignored Small Craft Cautions issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.
“He Is Our Hero”
While the legal battle looms, the Appelbee family is focusing on recovery. Austin, the quiet teen now being hailed as a national hero, says he just did “what he had to do.”
“I just kept thinking about my sister,” Austin said. “I knew if I stopped swimming, they wouldn’t get found.”
