Inside Tom Phillipsâ Final Moments and the End of 1358 Days in the Bush

For more than three years, fugitive father Tom Phillips and his three children had lived beyond the reach of police, hidden deep in the rugged bush of Waikatoâs west coast. Their disappearance in September 2021 sparked one of New Zealandâs most extraordinary manhunts, punctuated by rare sightings, unanswered questions, and a community divided.
On Monday morning, after 1358 days in the wilderness, the saga came to a violent end.
A Midnight Burglary
It began around 2.30 a.m. when a Piopio resident phoned police to report what they believed was a burglary in progress at the local PGG Wrightson store. According to investigators, Phillips had left his campsite under cover of darkness with one of his children. The alleged intention: to carry out yet another burglary to gather supplies.
The early-morning call set in motion the events that would close a four-year chapter. Police quickly deployed officers to the scene, responding to what they described as an unfolding crime.
By the end of the day, Tom Phillips was dead, his child safe in police care, and the country grappling with the dramatic conclusion to a case that had consumed headlines for years.
A Fugitive Father
Phillips first vanished with his three children â Ember, Maverick, and Jayda â in September 2021. They briefly returned later that month, only to disappear again in December. Since then, police believe Phillips sustained the children off the grid, moving between remote bush camps and occasionally re-emerging to steal food, fuel, and equipment.
Over time, sightings trickled in: a fleeting glimpse from teenage pig hunters on a coastal farm; reports of a man and children slipping through back roads in the dead of night. Each time, by the time police arrived, Phillips and the children had vanished back into the bush.
For the childrenâs mother and extended family, the years brought anguish and longing. For police, the search grew increasingly complex and resource-intensive, blending bushcraft survival with allegations of criminality.
The Final Hours
Police have not released full details of the confrontation that led to Phillipsâ death, but multiple investigations are now underway. Assistant Commissioner Tania Kura confirmed that a âcritical incident investigationâ has been launched, while the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) has been notified.
On the ground in Piopio, Inspector Andrea Rogers praised the officers involved and the members of the public who came forward in the early hours of Monday. âThis has been a difficult and taxing investigation for nearly four years,â she said. âWe are grateful to those who provided vital information that allowed us to act.â
The child who accompanied Phillips that morning was taken into care immediately. Police confirmed that all three children are now safe and will undergo medical examinations. Oranga Tamariki is working alongside police to ensure their welfare.
Relief and Reflection

For many, the discovery brought mixed emotions. Relief that the children were finally safe was tempered by sorrow at the violent conclusion. The childrenâs mother, Cat, released a statement describing a âwave of complex emotions.â She expressed profound gratitude that her tamariki were coming home after nearly four years, but also sadness that their fatherâs story had ended in tragedy.
âOur hope was always that the children could be returned peacefully,â she said. âNow we will focus on surrounding them with love and care as they begin to heal.â
Community Divided
In Marokopa and surrounding areas, locals have long been divided over Phillips. Some admired his ability to live off the land, raising his children outside conventional systems. Others condemned his actions as reckless and damaging, depriving the children of education, health care, and stability.
His death has sharpened those debates. Some say it brings closure to a prolonged saga that drained resources and divided the community. Others view it as a tragedy that leaves more questions than answers.
What Comes Next

Authorities have stressed that the immediate focus will be on the childrenâs health and reintegration. Medical assessments will determine their condition after years in the bush. Social workers will help them transition back into school, community, and family life.
Meanwhile, the investigations into Phillipsâ final hours are expected to take months. The IPCA review will examine whether police actions met legal and ethical standards, while the critical incident inquiry will gather evidence and testimony.
For police officers who spent years pursuing Phillips, the case is both a professional and personal milestone. âThis has been one of the most challenging investigations in recent memory,â Inspector Rogers acknowledged. âBut our priority has always been the safety of the children. Today, we can say they are safe.â
A Saga Ends
After 1358 days hidden in the bush, the children of Tom Phillips are finally out of the shadows. Their fatherâs life ended in confrontation, his fugitive story concluded in violence. For his children, however, a new chapter is only just beginning â one that will test their resilience, their familyâs strength, and the nationâs willingness to learn from one of its most remarkable missing persons cases.
