Doug Kiker, who gained fame as “The Singing Garbage Man” on American Idol, has died at age 32, family members confirmed Monday.
Doug Kiker, who touched viewers’ hearts during Season 18 of the popular singing competition, died unexpectedly in Denver, Colorado, according to social media posts from relatives.
His ex-fiancée, Valerie Cook, confirmed his death to TMZ, stating she does “hate” that her children have lost their father.
No official cause of death has been determined as of Monday.
Kiker’s sister, Angela Evans, created a GoFundMe campaign to help the family bring his body home and arrange a proper memorial service.
“This was completely unexpected. We are completely unprepared and are gonna need a little help getting him home from Denver, Colorado and being able to give the memorial that not only he but anyone deserves,” Evans wrote on social media.
In a separate social media post, Evans expressed her grief, writing, “Douglas Kiker you will live forever in our hearts. I miss you soooo.”
His brother William also acknowledged the loss on Facebook, sharing that Doug would always be his “baby bro.”
Kiker captured national attention during his 2020 “American Idol” audition when his heartfelt performance of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road” moved judge Katy Perry to tears.
The garbage collector from Mobile, Alabama, had never performed before an audience prior to his audition and admitted he had no formal music training.
His authentic personality and raw talent earned him a spot in the Hollywood round of the competition.

Judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Perry were visibly moved by Kiker’s genuine approach and humble background.
Kiker’s journey on the show ended after his performance of Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” in the following round.
Despite his early elimination, Kiker’s appearance on the show inspired many viewers who connected with his working-class background and unpolished talent.
Evans’ social media message thanked supporters for “the continued prayers at this very difficult time,” adding that the family has “been threw so much these past few years.”
In 2021, Kiker was arrested on domestic violence charges in Alabama.
Kiker was booked in May of 2021, according to Mobile County Sheriff’s Office records.
His arrest came just days after American Idol Season 19 finalist Caleb Kennedy, who was a fan favorite, was cut from the show when a racially insensitive video surfaced.
Kiker, a married father of two, was still working full-time on a garbage truck as of then.
