“It is expected this will remain her condition for some time,” the hospital said in a statement on behalf of Stewart’s family.

“There is a long road ahead for her and her family.”

The 35-year-old has undergone multiple surgeries since the attack, including an arm amputation.

Friends, family and strangers have already stepped in with enormous generosity, putting hundreds of thousands of dollars towards her prosthetics, rehabilitation and the ongoing care she will need.

Yesterday, hundreds of people gathered for an ocean swim at Coogee.

Extra safety measures for the community were in place at the beach, including a drone, jet skis, inflatable rescue boats and board paddlers.

Onlookers at the scene described emotional moments taking place, including families embracing before entering the water, and parents reassuring their children they were safe.

Some only ducked in for a dip, while others swam a full lap of the bay.
