Former Queensland Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski has died aged 67 after a battle with cancer.
Gollschewski, who retired as the state’s top police officer in February, died on Friday after becoming the third-longest-serving officer in Queensland Police Service history.

He joined the service more than four decades ago and eventually became Queensland’s 21st Police Commissioner in April 2024.
Acting Commissioner Brett Pointing remembered him as a respected leader whose influence extended well beyond Queensland.
“Throughout his distinguished career, Steve was a remarkable strategist and contemporary leader, disciplined in his thinking, measured in his decisions and guided by deeply held personal values,” Pointing said.
His family have released a statement, saying he “approached his diagnosis and treatment with resolute determination.”
“Our darling Steve passed away this morning surrounded by the love and admiration of his family after facing a sudden and cruel complication on his 18-month cancer journey,” the statement read.

“As with so many facets of Steve’s life, especially his family, his long policing career and beloved hockey team, he gave it his all and did his very best.”
Gollschewski served as commissioner for less than two years before retiring in February this year, but his career with Queensland Police spanned generations.
“Steve was admired by many for his judgement, foresight and deep understanding of policing, and his impact will continue to be felt across Queensland, nationally and internationally for many years to come,” Pointing said.
“He will be remembered as an exceptional leader who used insight and innovation to strengthen the organisation and help keep the community safe.”
Pointing said Gollschewski had left a lasting legacy after dedicating much of his life to serving Queensland communities.
“Steve’s legacy of service, courage, integrity and dedication will be remembered with great respect and gratitude by the many people and communities influenced by him.”
Queensland Police extended its condolences to Gollschewski’s family, friends and former colleagues.
Gollschewski was 67.
