“He’s a Ticking Time Bomb!”
James Bulger’s Father Fights to Keep Jon Venables Behind Bars
Three decades may have passed since the brutal murder of two-year-old James Bulger, but for his father, Ralph Bulger, the pain remains raw — and his fear is sharper than ever. With Jon Venables, one of James’s killers, due to face a parole hearing on November 14, Ralph is warning that releasing him would be nothing short of a tragedy waiting to happen.
A Father’s Plea
Speaking with TalkTV’s Jeremy Kyle and Nicola Thorp, Ralph didn’t mince words. He begged the Justice Secretary to allow him into the hearing, insisting the public must understand the stakes.
“I know he will kill another innocent child,” Ralph said bluntly, his voice carrying the weight of three decades of grief. “He’s a ticking time bomb.”

The Crime That Shocked Britain
In February 1993, James Bulger was abducted from a shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside, by two ten-year-old boys: Jon Venables and Robert Thompson. The horrific crime — which saw the toddler brutally murdered — shook the nation to its core. Both boys were convicted, but because of their age, they were granted anonymity and released after serving just eight years.
Venables, however, has repeatedly returned to prison over the years, facing charges related to child abuse images. Each time, the debate has reignited: can someone who committed such acts ever truly be rehabilitated?
The Upcoming Hearing
Now 40, Venables is set to appear before a parole panel in mid-November for a two-day hearing that could determine whether he walks free again. For Ralph Bulger, the idea is unthinkable.
“How can they even consider it?” he asked. “It’s not just about what he did to James — it’s about what he’s done since. He’s shown time and time again that he’s dangerous. If they let him out, another child will suffer.”
Public Outrage and Renewed Scrutiny
The case continues to stir anger across the UK. Campaigners argue that Venables has been given chance after chance, only to fall back into disturbing behaviour. For many, his name is synonymous with risk — and with failure of the justice system to prioritize child safety.
What Happens Next?
The parole board’s decision could take weeks after the November hearing. Whatever the outcome, one fact remains clear: the family of James Bulger will never find peace. For Ralph, the fight is not just about justice for his son — it’s about preventing another family from enduring the same horror.
“James didn’t get a second chance,” Ralph said. “Why should Venables?”
