Next week, Prince William and Kate Middleton will celebrate 14 years of marriage. The couple, who tied the knot on April 29, 2011, will travel to the Isles of Mull and Iona in Scotland to connect with the local communities and promote environmental efforts. And while the trip is a royal engagement, it’s likely the couple will also find some time to honor this milestone in their relationship. However, even though the duo is known for their sentimental anniversary gifts, it’s likely they’ll break from the traditional gifts associated with this year of marriage.
For a couple’s 14th wedding anniversary, the traditional gift is ivory. However, since William and Kate are both outspoken conservationists, it’s unlikely either of them would opt to give the other this type of gift. In recent years, the category was broadened to include animal items in general. If they do decide to stay in line with traditional gifting standards, they may opt for cruelty-free animal products. William could also decide to lean into the gemstone or flower associated with 14 years of marriage, offering his wife a piece of opal jewelry or sweet dahlias, respectively. Yet it appears more likely that he’ll depart from traditional customs—and instead select something of his own volition. The same can be assumed for Kate, who has also made her love for the environment clear in her work for the Commonwealth.

In 2023, William surprised Kate with a family heirloom, a diamond ring that belonged to Princess Diana, as well as a replica of the bouquet of flowers she held on their wedding day in 2011, according to Us Weekly. The princess was just as heartfelt and sentimental with her gifts that same year, giving her husband a framed sketch of the two of them based off of a photo from their years at St. Andrew’s, the outlet reported. With those gifts, the duo departed from the standard traditional presents for 12 years of marriage: silk or linen. Based on that, it’s likely that this year, they will also feel empowered to select a gift that speaks the most to them—and their love—rather than a traditional standard. Even if the couple chooses not to reveal the gifts they exchange, it’s likely that they’ll post a photo commemorating their years together. Last year, in honor of their 13th anniversary, the duo posted a black-and-white photo from their wedding day.
The year marks a particularly important milestone for the couple. In September 2024, Kate announced that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment—and was now focused on staying cancer-free. “I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can,” she said in a video disclosing the news to the public. “Despite all that has gone before I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.” With this anniversary marking the first one since she finished treatment, it’s likely to be a heartfelt one for the two royals.
