ITV’s The Chase Enforces Controversial Rule for Eliminated Contestants

The Chase has been providing viewers with top-notch quizzing content for over a decade but some fans may not be aware of the show’s rules for those who are knocked out

Hopeful contestants on The Chase always have their eyes set on a big win, yet as many fans are aware, not all succeed. Since 2009, Bradley Walsh has been welcoming four hopefuls onto the ITV show to go up against one of the nation’s top quizzers, aiming to take home a big cash prize.

The last hurdle is the final chase, where the remaining players must try to outsmart the chaser in a nail-biting two-minute question round. But what about those who don’t make it?

It’s common for at least one player to miss the final chase after being outpaced by the chaser, leaving them to watch from the sidelines as their co-players may pocket thousands.

Contestants go head to head with the Chasers

A past participant spilled the beans on Reddit about this process when questioned whether those eliminated during the head-to-head rounds get to watch the rest of the game.

One asked: “When you’ve been caught in the head-to-head part, does the show allow you to stick around so you can see your fellow team performing the final chase?”

They replied: “Yeah, you go sit with the crew and watch from the sidelines.”

Highlighting the cutthroat nature of the game, another added in: “Tbh if I was the only one knocked out, I’d be pretty upset if the other three won big.”

Another commenter speculated that having players stay on set might be necessary in case the situation calls for a ‘Lazarus Team’.

This means a scenario where the entire team is ousted during the individual rounds, yet one participant gets another shot at glory, duking it out solo against the Chaser in the finale while teammates watch. If they win, each gets a £1,000 prize.

Not all contestants make it to the final chase

The ex-contestant said: “I mean arguably they could just fetch us back from the green room if that were to happen but no, I was sat over by the adjudicator sort of off to the right of where the chaser sits.”

The competitor, who faced Shaun Wallace during their turn, revealed further behind-the-scenes tea: “Another bit of info, there’s no audience. All the laughter etc is added in post production. They only have an audience for the celeb version. The music does play in the studio though.”
