More than a week after the tragic accident that killed Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, Spanish police have for the first time confirmed that Diogo Jota himself was driving the Lamborghini Huracan, valued at £185,000 (over 6.5 billion VND), at the time of the collision.

The acid-green supercar reportedly lost control and veered off the road, erupting in flames on the A-52 highway, near the city of Zamora (Spain), in the early hours of July 4.

According to preliminary investigation results, the vehicle may have been exceeding the speed limit, and it’s highly probable that a tire burst while overtaking – leading to the driver losing control. Both Diogo Jota and his brother were confirmed dead immediately after the impact.

It is understood that Diogo Jota and his brother were on their way to the port city of Santander (Spain) to catch a ferry to England, intending to return to Liverpool. After lung surgery, doctors had advised Jota to travel by road instead of flying. However, their journey back to England became the final trip for both brothers.

Accident Stretch Dubbed a “Black Spot” for Traffic

An independent expert in Spanish road safety stated that the A-52 road section – where the accident occurred – has long been warned by locals as “very dangerous.” Not only is it winding with limited visibility, but it also frequently sees wild animals such as wolves and deer, which have caused numerous collisions.

In fact, just eight days before Jota’s incident, a 60-year-old woman nearly lost her life in similar circumstances on the very same stretch. The road barriers are believed to have an “incorrect approach angle design,” turning them from safety measures into “deadly obstacles.” The expert suggested that speed was not the sole cause, and the road infrastructure also needs re-evaluation.

The Spanish Civil Guard stated that the full technical report is still being completed and will be submitted to the court in Puebla de Sanabria for processing.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether the full investigation results will be made public. A comprehensive investigation is still underway. From initial information, Jota’s death is not simply a matter of speed. It is also a story about traffic infrastructure, driver negligence, and perhaps cruel fate. The public is following this tragic accident closely, partly because if it weren’t Diogo Jota – a European football star – would this accident be investigated to its fullest extent?

Following the accident, the funeral of Jota and his brother was held in their hometown of Gondomar (near Porto, Portugal), attended by family, friends, and some teammates from Liverpool and the Portuguese national team.

According to MailOnline, Diogo Jota’s widow, Rute Cardoso, who married him on June 22, may inherit an estimated £35 million in assets, including contracts, properties, and investments of the player born in 1996. With Diogo Jota’s passing, Rute is left to raise their three young children alone.
