Authorities in Germany have confirmed that forensic teams recovered a disturbing item during a 2020 search of a property previously occupied by Christian Brückner — a child’s doll, modified and partially burned, with strands of what appears to be human hair woven into the scalp.
The doll was found inside a hidden drawer beneath floorboards at a run-down property in Braunschweig, where Brückner once resided. While early reports at the time acknowledged the recovery of children’s items, the detail regarding the doll’s condition and contents has only recently been confirmed by sources within the German Federal Criminal Police Office.
Forensic analysis is still ongoing to determine whether the hair is synthetic or human, and if so, whether DNA can be extracted. Officials remain cautious, noting that while the item is unsettling, its connection to the McCann case remains speculative unless forensic testing reveals a direct match.
Investigators say the find is significant given the broader context: a suspect with a history of child abuse, in possession of dozens of photos and videos of minors, including covert footage, seized from hard drives buried near the same location.
This revelation also prompted a wider review of other properties connected to Brückner across Europe. German authorities have since reopened investigations into five separate addresses where he was believed to have stayed between 2006 and 2010, including in Portugal and northern Germany.
Kate and Gerry McCann were notified of the object’s discovery at the time but chose not to address it publicly. A family friend said, “They have seen and heard far more than the public ever has. They remain focused on the evidence that can bring definitive answers.”
Experts believe that if DNA or material evidence links the doll to Madeleine, it could represent one of the most chilling and conclusive pieces of the puzzle to date. For now, forensic teams continue their slow, methodical work as the case inches forward.
