Heartland: The Heart and Soul of Canada’s Longest-Running Drama

CALGARY, Alberta — Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by sweeping vistas and whispering fields, lies a world where family, healing, and horses come together — a world known to millions of fans as Heartland.

What began as a modest Canadian television series based on a set of novels by Lauren Brooke has become a cultural touchstone, an enduring story about love, resilience, and second chances. Now in its record-breaking run, Heartland is officially Canada’s longest-running one-hour scripted drama, with more than 260 episodes and a feature-length Christmas movie to its name.

At its core, Heartland follows the life of Amy Fleming — portrayed by actress Amber Marshall — a gifted horse whisperer who, alongside her family, helps rehabilitate horses and their owners through patience, empathy, and understanding.

A Story That Found Its Star

For Amber Marshall, the journey to Heartland felt like destiny. “For those who have seen Heartland and know a little bit about me, you know exactly why I fell in love with this role,” she explained. “I had a few of the Heartland books on my shelf growing up, so when I first heard about the role, I already had some familiarity with the characters and story.”

That early connection quickly blossomed into something much deeper. Since the show’s premiere in 2007, Marshall has become synonymous with Amy Fleming — both compassionate horse lovers, both guided by instinct and heart.

Her deep bond with animals isn’t just for the cameras. On-screen and off, Marshall lives the life her character embodies, spending her days surrounded by horses, dogs, and the sprawling landscapes of Alberta.

Filming in Alberta’s Real-Life Heartland

The production of Heartland has become as iconic as its storylines. Much of the show is filmed on a working ranch in the foothills of the Rockies, a setting so breathtaking it often feels like another character in the show.

“We have such an incredible ‘office’ to work at every day — you can see why I love my job,” Marshall said with a smile.

The crew also uses studio spaces in Calgary, as well as locations around southwestern Alberta, including the charming town of High River, which doubles as the fictional community of Hudson. Among its most recognizable landmarks is Maggie’s Diner, a fan favorite that serves as the show’s social hub. Though visitors can find the exterior in High River, Marshall notes that it’s not a real diner: “Please note this location is only a set and can only be viewed from the outside as it is not an open, functioning diner.”

The Real Stars: The Horses of Heartland

Of course, Heartland wouldn’t be Heartland without its horses. The show’s equine cast is just as beloved as its human stars. The majority of the horses used on set are owned and trained by one individual, who brings them in daily to work alongside the actors.

Marshall, an accomplished rider, is often asked whether any of her own horses appear in the series — and now, the answer is yes.

“Recently after a position opened, my horse Hawk was able to join the cast,” she said proudly. “In the recent seasons, Hawk can be seen playing the role of Spartan — my character’s favorite horse.”

The arrangement couldn’t be more perfect. “It works out well for me, because I get to spend time with Hawk at work during my busy time, and don’t feel guilty when I take my other horses out for a ride on my off time,” Marshall added.

For fans who have followed Amy’s journey with Spartan from the beginning, knowing the horse behind the role belongs to the actress herself adds a special layer of authenticity to the show’s heartfelt bond between woman and animal.

The Healing Power of Heartland

Blame It On Heartland – The Green Horseman

While Heartland tells stories of rescuing and rehabilitating horses, Marshall believes the series heals people, too.

“It’s not just the horses on TV that we heal each episode,” she reflected. “I believe Heartland has healing powers of its own — for the viewers, and even for all of us who are a part of it. There’s something about the energy of this show. It really does have heart.”

That energy has resonated far beyond Canada’s borders. Heartland has developed a massive international following, streaming in more than 100 countries. Fans from around the world visit High River and Alberta’s ranch country, hoping to glimpse the world they’ve come to love.

A Lasting Legacy of Love and Hope

Now, as Heartland continues to grow, its themes of family, community, and compassion remain timeless. Viewers have watched Amy Fleming evolve from a spirited young woman to a devoted mother and healer, mirroring the journeys of those who have followed the series for nearly two decades.

For Amber Marshall, it’s more than a role — it’s a calling. “There’s something magical about being part of something that brings people comfort,” she said. “Heartland is a reminder that no matter what happens, healing is possible — for horses, for families, and for hearts.”
