COMMUNITY SHATTERED AFTER THREE CHILDREN AND FATHER DIE IN SUSPECTED MURDER-SUICIDE IN SANSON

A rural New Zealand community has been left devastated after three young children and their father died in a house fire in Sanson, north of Wellington, in what police are investigating as a suspected murder-suicide. Emergency services were called to the property shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, 15 November, following reports of a rapidly spreading blaze.

When first responders arrived, the house was already engulfed in flames. Authorities later confirmed that a 1-year-old, a 5-year-old, a 7-year-old and an adult male were found dead at the scene. Police said they were not seeking any other suspects in relation to the incident, indicating all individuals involved were believed to be inside the home at the time of the fire.

Manawatū Area Commander Inspector Ross Grantham said the father did not suffer burns but died at the scene. He declined to comment on the precise cause of death or confirm whether the case had officially been classified as homicide, citing the ongoing investigation.

“The circumstances remain under investigation,” police said in a statement. “The house was severely damaged, however Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.”

Authorities confirmed that two of the children and the father were recovered from the damaged property on Sunday morning. Family members performed karakia at the scene to bless the bodies before they were removed. The body of the third child was recovered later that day.

🔹 Investigation Still Underway

Police and fire investigators continue to examine the property to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the deaths. While multiple media outlets, including The New Zealand Herald and RNZ, reported that the case is being treated as a suspected murder-suicide, police did not publicly confirm that designation at a subsequent press conference.

Forensic teams are expected to spend several days gathering evidence due to the extent of the structural damage. Specialist fire analysts have been called in to assess burn patterns and identify whether accelerants, ignition devices, or other contributing factors may have played a role.

Post-mortem examinations are underway and are expected to provide further clarity on cause of death, though police have warned the full investigative process may take weeks.

🔹 Community Reaction: “Dark and Terrifying”

The tragedy has deeply affected residents in the small Manawatū township, where the family was known to locals. Many expressed disbelief that such an incident could occur in their close-knit community.

One neighbour said the fire escalated so quickly that by the time residents noticed thick smoke rising from the property, flames had already spread through several rooms.

“It felt dark and terrifying,” the resident said. “We just stood there helpless, hoping someone would come out, but they never did.”

Multiple residents said emergency services arrived within minutes, but heat and smoke prevented entry into the home.

Another neighbour described seeing adults running into the street calling for help as the flames intensified.

“The whole thing happened in moments,” the witness recalled. “You can’t prepare yourself for something like that.”

🔹 Family Support & Cultural Response

Authorities confirmed that extended family members were present at the scene when the first bodies were removed. Karakia — a traditional Māori blessing — was performed to honour the deceased before they were transported from the property, a practice police said was done out of respect for grieving relatives.

Support services have been arranged for the family as well as local residents, and police say they are working closely with community groups and iwi representatives to ensure cultural and pastoral care.

🔹 A Long Road to Answers

While speculation has circulated both locally and online, police urged the public to allow investigators time to work through evidence before drawing conclusions.

“We recognise the community’s grief, but we will not have immediate answers,” Inspector Grantham said.

Authorities say further updates will be provided once post-mortem and forensic findings are completed. In the meantime, the property remains cordoned off, and police have asked anyone with information or footage from the area to come forward.

The deaths have intensified ongoing public conversations about family violence, mental health, social services, and rural support networks, though officials cautioned against making assumptions until more facts are confirmed.

For now, the focus remains on supporting the surviving family members and a community mourning the loss of three young children whose lives ended suddenly and tragically.
