Grieving Mother Challenges Police Findings in Death of Texas A&M Cheerleader Found After Game Day

The mother of a Texas A&M cheerleader whose body was discovered outside an Austin apartment building early Saturday says she does not accept the preliminary police assessment that her daughter’s death was accidental or self-inflicted. Instead, she believes there may be more to the story surrounding the final hours of 19-year-old Brianna Aguilera, who had been attending a tailgate party after a long day of college football festivities.

Aguilera, a freshman at Texas A&M and a member of the school’s cheer program, had traveled to Austin for the rivalry game between Texas A&M and the University of Texas. According to her mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, Brianna spent the day celebrating with friends before attending a gathering at an apartment complex near the stadium. It was outside that complex that Brianna’s body was discovered in the early hours of the morning.

The Austin Police Department confirmed that investigators initially believed the teen’s fall from a balcony was consistent with an accident or possible suicide. However, they noted the investigation is ongoing and autopsy results are still pending. No arrests have been made, and police have not indicated evidence of foul play.

Rodriguez, however, told media outlets that she does not accept those explanations. Through tears and visible anguish, she claimed her daughter may have been pushed or thrown from the balcony, describing her view as a mother seeking answers in the midst of profound loss. She stressed that the day leading up to Brianna’s death involved heavy drinking, and she fears that intoxication, confusion, or panic among friends may have played a role in whatever happened next.

“She didn’t do this to herself,” Rodriguez said, insisting that her daughter would not have taken her own life. According to her, Brianna had recently been excited about her future, her team, and upcoming school events. “None of it adds up,” she said. “As her mother, I know something is wrong.”

Rodriguez has also suggested that tension between Brianna and another girl earlier in the evening may have been relevant. She claimed the two had argued about a boy, though no witnesses have publicly confirmed this interaction. Still, she believes that the combination of alcohol, emotions, and youthful conflict could have created a dangerous situation — one that may not align with the police’s initial assessment.

Aguilera’s mother expressed frustration over the speed with which she felt authorities reached their early conclusions. She said that hearing police describe the death as accidental or possibly self-inflicted felt like a second blow amid profound grief. “I’m not accepting that,” she said firmly. “My daughter deserves the truth.”

Friends and classmates have described Brianna as energetic, outgoing, and deeply committed to her cheer team. Social media accounts belonging to teammates filled with messages of heartbreak, disbelief, and calls for justice. Many echoed the sentiment that her death does not make sense to them and expressed hope that the full truth will emerge as investigators review evidence and toxicology results.

The Austin Police Department has not responded directly to Rodriguez’s statements but reiterated that the investigation remains open. Detectives continue interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage from the area, and awaiting laboratory findings that may clarify Brianna’s condition at the time of her fall.

Experts note that in cases involving falls from elevated structures, it can take days or even weeks for medical examiners to determine the precise cause and contributing factors. Alcohol, environmental hazards, and physical trauma all play roles that require scientific review. Police typically classify early assessments as preliminary, subject to change if new information emerges.

“They probably got scared and threw her over the balcony, or they shoved her off,” Rodriguez said. Facebok / Stephanie Rodriguez

Rodriguez has urged those who were with Brianna during the final hours of her life to come forward with full transparency. She believes someone may know more than they have shared and that even small details could be crucial. “If you were there, please speak up,” she said. “We just want to understand what happened.”

The tragedy has sparked wider discussion about alcohol consumption among college students, safety protocols at parties, and the emotional wellbeing of young adults under academic and social pressure. Universities across Texas and beyond have expressed condolences and reminded students of available support services.

For now, Brianna Aguilera’s family is preparing for a funeral no parent ever imagines. As they grieve, Rodriguez continues to push for clarity — not to assign blame prematurely, she says, but to ensure that her daughter’s final moments are understood with honesty and care.

“We loved her more than anything,” the mother said. “And we’re not giving up until we know the truth.”
