The BBC has officially announced The Cage, a gripping new Liverpool-set crime drama from BAFTA-nominated writer Tony Schumacher, creator of the acclaimed series The Responder. The five-part series promises a blend of dark humour, unpredictable twists, and deeply human storytelling — with BBC executives describing it as “character-driven, hugely entertaining and full of heart.”

At the centre of the high-energy thriller are Sheridan Smith and Michael Socha, two powerhouse performers cast as Leanne and Matty, casino workers whose split-second decisions catapult them into chaos. Their chemistry, paired with Schumacher’s signature mix of grit and emotional depth, has already positioned the project as one of the BBC’s most anticipated dramas of the upcoming slate.

A Heist Gone Wrong — and Lives Spiralling Out of Control

The series begins with a twist that instantly sets the tone: Leanne and Matty, unaware of each other’s motives, break into the same safe at the Liverpool casino where they work. Their attempt to steal from an inner-city gambling operation quickly unravels, putting them on the run from both the police and the gangster they have inadvertently crossed.

As the story unfolds, viewers will gradually learn what drives each character to desperation — and what binds them together as their lives collide. The BBC describes the show as part crime thriller, part family drama, and “even a love story of sorts,” underscoring Schumacher’s ability to blend emotional nuance with dangerous stakes.

Sheridan Smith and Michael Socha Lead a High-Calibre Creative Team

Smith, a BAFTA winner known for Cilla, Mrs Biggs, and The C Word, returns to dramatic television in a role expected to showcase both her range and intensity. Socha (Showtrial, The Gallows Pole) plays Matty, whose charm and volatility set him on a collision course with Leanne from the opening scene.

Behind the camera, the series reunites Schumacher with seasoned director Al Mackay, known for Kidnapped and Without Sin. Their collaboration brings together two creatives with a strong grasp of character-driven tension.

Element Pictures — the Fremantle-owned production company behind Normal People and The Listeners — is producing the series for BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Schumacher expressed deep enthusiasm about returning to the BBC:
“Coming back with my second major show and working with talents like Sheridan, Michael, and the teams at Element Pictures and the BBC is an honour. With Al directing, it feels like we’re baking a big Liverpool drama cake — filled with dark humour, love, and entertainment. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Executive producers Christopher Aird and Hilary Martin described The Cage as a story that blends intensity with emotional depth.

“Tony writes characters from the heart that break your heart,” they said. “The Cage is a crime show, a show about family, and a love story. It’s funny, poignant, thrilling, and sad — often all at once. We know Al Mackay will bring real-world authenticity and energy to Tony’s vision.”

BBC Drama Chief: “Viewers Are in for a Treat”

BBC Director of Drama Lindsay Salt also celebrated the announcement, framing The Cage as an exciting addition to the BBC’s original programming.

“The Cage is character-driven, hugely entertaining and full of heart,” Salt said. “With Sheridan Smith and Michael Socha leading the cast, Al Mackay directing, and Element Pictures producing, viewers are in for a treat.”

She noted that Schumacher’s return to the BBC follows the success of The Responder, which earned critical acclaim for its complex storytelling and authentic portrayal of frontline policing.

Shot in Liverpool — Rooted in the City’s Character

Filming will take place in Liverpool and across Merseyside, a region that continues to inspire Schumacher’s work. As with The Responder, the series is expected to use the city not just as a backdrop but as a character in its own right — with its humour, hardship, and humanity woven into every frame.

The decision to ground the story in Liverpool’s nightlife and casino underworld gives the drama a fresh setting within British crime television.
