Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis Team Up for Prime Video’s “Scarpetta” — A Star-Studded, Blood-Stained Thriller from Blumhouse TV
Two of Hollywood’s most celebrated powerhouses, Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, are joining forces for one of television’s most anticipated new dramas — Scarpetta, a gripping psychological thriller based on Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling crime novels. Produced by Blumhouse Television for Prime Video, the upcoming series promises a blend of cerebral mystery, emotional depth, and the kind of prestige performances that have come to define both stars’ careers.
A Murder Mystery with Serious Star Power
The involvement of Kidman and Curtis alone makes Scarpetta a must-watch, but the ensemble behind them takes the project to another level. Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and Ariana DeBose round out the principal cast, bringing a mix of intensity, charisma, and gravitas. Rising talents Rosy McEwen and Jake Cannavale will portray younger versions of Kidman and Cannavale’s characters, hinting that the series will weave multiple timelines and complex backstories into its murder mystery framework.
Behind the camera, Scarpetta boasts an equally formidable creative team. David Gordon Green, who recently directed Curtis in his modern Halloween trilogy, will helm the first two episodes. The showrunner, writer, and executive producer is Liz Sarnoff, an Emmy-nominated storyteller known for her work on Lost, Deadwood, and Barry. With Sarnoff steering the narrative, audiences can expect tightly wound plotting, dark humor, and an unflinching look at the psychology of crime.
Scarpetta is a co-production between Blumhouse Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with Kidman’s Blossom Films and Curtis’s Comet Pictures. Both actresses also serve as executive producers, alongside Cornwell herself and Jason Blum, Jeremy Gold, Chris Dickie, and Chris McCumber of Blumhouse TV. Green and Amy Sayres are also attached as executive producers.
A Chilling Return to Virginia
Based on Cornwell’s iconic novels, Scarpetta follows Dr. Kay Scarpetta (Kidman), a brilliant and meticulous Chief Medical Examiner who returns to Virginia to reclaim her former position. But her professional comeback is complicated by personal entanglements and old wounds — especially her fraught relationship with her sister Dorothy (Curtis). Beneath the surface lies a web of secrets, betrayals, and long-held grudges that threaten to resurface as Scarpetta becomes entangled in a new series of disturbing crimes.
According to Prime Video’s official synopsis, the show “follows Kay Scarpetta as she returns to Virginia and resumes her former position with complex relationships, both personal and professional — including her sister Dorothy, with plenty of grudges and secrets to uncover.” The series promises an atmospheric mix of forensic investigation and family drama, echoing the layered storytelling that made Cornwell’s novels international bestsellers.
A Dream Project Decades in the Making
For both of its leading ladies, Scarpetta marks a career milestone years in the making. Kidman revealed that she has pursued the adaptation for nearly two decades. “I’ve been pursuing Scarpetta for nearly twenty years going back to when it was intended to be a feature,” Kidman said in a press statement. “To unite with the formidable Jamie Lee Curtis, Prime Video, Jason Blum, and David Gordon Green on Liz Sarnoff’s series version of Patricia Cornwell’s epic and thrilling books feels like it was meant to be. I cannot wait to inhabit Kay Scarpetta and am so thankful to Patricia Cornwell for entrusting me with her.”
Curtis, who will portray Dorothy, echoed that enthusiasm. “I have wanted to bring Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta to a screen, with my company Comet Pictures, for a while,” Curtis said. “I’m particularly excited that Nicole Kidman will finally bring her to life. I’m also looking forward to playing Nicole’s sister as we tell the story with Liz Sarnoff’s expert care, leadership, skill, and talent. I know the ardent fans of the books will be very happy, and the new audience will be compelled by the characters, crimes, and mysteries that are the trifecta of Patricia’s masterful storytelling. Blumhouse, Blossom, and Prime Video are the perfect partners to bring Scarpetta to you — and a warning… there WILL be blood.”
A Prestige Crime Drama with Bite
With its powerhouse cast, pedigree production team, and psychological edge, Scarpetta is shaping up to be more than just another crime procedural. Early buzz from inside the industry suggests the tone will lean toward atmospheric and cerebral, blending forensic realism with emotional suspense in the spirit of Mindhunter, The Fall, and Big Little Lies. For Kidman, whose recent work in Nine Perfect Strangers and The Undoing showcased her command of complex characters, the role of Kay Scarpetta may prove one of her most layered yet.
As Prime Video continues to invest heavily in prestige storytelling, Scarpetta could become its next major tentpole series — a blend of star power, psychological intrigue, and blood-soaked mystery that reminds viewers why true-crime fiction remains one of television’s most addictive genres.
“Scarpetta” will stream exclusively on Prime Video. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
