FIVE YOUNG LIVES LOST IN AN INSTANT: Horror Louth crash claims couple fresh from Dubai dream holiday and three close friends as community reels in unimaginable grief

DUNDALK, Co Louth – A tight-knit circle of friends enjoying the prime of their lives were wiped out in a single catastrophic moment on a rain-soaked country road on Saturday night, leaving two rural communities in Ireland and Scotland in Scotland devastated beyond words.
Chloe McGee, 23, a much-loved primary school teacher from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, died alongside her boyfriend of several years, Alan McCluskey, also 23, from Drumconrath, Co Meath. With them in the Volkswagen Golf were three inseparable friends: Chloe Hipson, 21, who had travelled over from her home in Lanarkshire, Scotland; Dylan Commins, 23, also from Drumconrath; and Shay Duffy, 21, from Carrickmacross.
All five were pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on the narrow, winding L3168 local road between the villages of Louth and Tallanstown shortly after 9pm on Saturday 29 November 2025.
Gardaí confirmed the Golf was travelling in the direction of Tallanstown when, on a sharp bend in treacherous wet conditions, it collided almost head-on with a Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 being driven in the opposite direction. The driver of the Land Cruiser, a man in his 50s, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The young couple had only returned days earlier from a sun-soaked holiday in Dubai, posting smiling photographs against the glittering skyline of the United Arab Emirates just last week. Friends say Chloe and Alan were “madly in love” and had been excitedly planning their future together.
Sinn Féin councillor Michael Gallagher, who knew Alan personally from the small village of Drumconrath, struggled to hold back tears as he spoke to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland.
“This is an absolute nightmare for everyone involved,” he said. “The fact that Chloe and Alan were a couple – that just adds another layer of unbearable tragedy for both families. Chloe herself was very well known here too; she taught in the area and was adored by the children. Five young people with everything to live for, gone in the blink of an eye. The people are stunned, saddened and just don’t know where to go from there. There’s going to be a few really dark days ahead.”
Tributes poured in overnight across social media as news of the tragedy spread.
Carrickmacross GAA club, where Shay Duffy was a talented underage player, posted: “We are utterly heartbroken to learn of the passing of our young clubman Shay Duffy in last night’s road traffic accident. Shay was a gentleman on and off the pitch. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
Drumconrath GFC described Alan McCluskey and Dylan Commins as “two of our own – lifelong friends, teammates and gentlemen” adding: “The club is numb. We have lost two sons of Drumconrath in the most unimaginable circumstances.”
In Scotland, friends of Chloe Hipson remembered a “beautiful, kind soul who lit up every room”. One wrote: “Chloe came over to Ireland for the weekend to see her best mates and now she’s never coming home. We are broken.”
The close friendship group had gathered for what was supposed to be a normal Saturday night out. Locals say the L3168 is notorious among residents for being dangerously narrow and poorly lit, with several serious accidents in recent years.
Garda Forensic Collision Investigators spent Sunday examining the scene, which remained sealed off for most of the day. The bodies of the five victims were removed to Louth County Hospital mortuary where post-mortem examinations are due to take place on Monday.

Local priest Fr Paddy Rushe, who has been comforting the bereaved families, said: “These were five exceptional young people – full of life, full of kindness. An entire community has been shattered. We are holding them all in our prayers.”
Gardaí in Ardee have renewed appeals for witnesses and dash-cam footage, particularly from anyone who was travelling on the L3168 between 8.30pm and 9.15pm on Saturday night.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Ardee Garda Station on 041-6853222, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
As five families prepare for the most heartbreaking of Christmases, the villages of Carrickmacross, Drumconrath and surrounding areas have fallen silent – bound together in grief for the beautiful young lives cut cruelly short.
