Kat Timpf Opens Up About Breast Cancer Diagnosis: “Facing Life and Death in the Same Day”

Fox News contributor and television personality Kat Timpf is speaking publicly for the first time about what she describes as the most emotionally overwhelming experience of her life: receiving a breast cancer diagnosis while preparing to give birth to her first child.

In a candid conversation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the 36-year-old sat down with PEOPLE to share the details of her health journey, revealing how a moment of routine pregnancy discomfort evolved into a life-altering medical discovery. Timpf says she hopes that by talking openly about her diagnosis, she can help other women advocate for themselves and recognize symptoms they might otherwise dismiss.

Timpf says her cancer journey began in February, just days before her due date. Like many expectant mothers, she noticed changes in her breasts during the final stretch of pregnancy — swelling, sensitivity, and fluctuations that she assumed were normal. Nothing seemed unusual until she spotted a small bump on her nipple.

“I noticed a bump on my nipple and I didn’t really think that much of it because your boobs start to look crazy when you’re pregnant,” she recalls. With her due date approaching, she was focused on preparing for labor and dismissed the bump as another temporary change.

A few days later, while at home using a breast pump in an attempt to encourage labor, Timpf mentioned the bump to her sister. Her sister immediately expressed concern, urging her to talk to her doctor sooner rather than later. Timpf agreed — though she still wasn’t expecting the reaction she would get.

“I showed my doctor, not expecting anything,” she says. “She kind of jumped back and sent me to go get an ultrasound… and then they recommended I get a biopsy.”

Within hours, the tone of her prenatal care shifted dramatically. What began as a routine labor-prep appointment quickly escalated into a cascade of urgent tests. Timpf was suddenly shuttling between specialists, undergoing imaging, and being prepared for the possibility that she might be facing something far more serious than a benign pregnancy-related change.

The emotional whiplash was immediate and intense. On one hand, she was about to welcome her first child. On the other, she was walking into a radiology department to rule out cancer.

“It felt like I was facing life and death in the same day,” she says. “I was about to become a mom — the happiest moment of my life — and at the same time, I was terrified of what they might find.”

The days that followed, she recalls, were some of the longest of her life. Waiting for biopsy results while recovering from childbirth meant juggling fear with the overwhelming physical and emotional demands of new motherhood.

When the diagnosis finally came, it confirmed what her medical team had feared. Timpf had breast cancer.

“I don’t think anything can prepare you for hearing those words,” she says. “Especially not when you’re holding a newborn.”

Timpf has not publicly disclosed the specific type or stage of her cancer, focusing instead on the emotional and practical realities of navigating treatment while caring for an infant. She describes the early weeks after diagnosis as a blur — a mixture of doctor’s appointments, breastfeeding transitions, discussions about treatment plans, and the constant reminder of why she needed to fight.

Her medical team walked her through the next steps carefully, balancing the urgency of cancer treatment with her recovery from childbirth. Timpf says she was grateful for the doctors who not only guided her medically but understood the unique emotional weight of facing a serious illness during what was supposed to be the most joyful chapter of her life.

Now, months later, she is moving forward with treatment and adjusting to life as a new mother undergoing a medical battle few expect at age 36.

“It’s not the journey I thought I would be on,” she says. “But I’m doing everything I can to stay strong, stay informed, and stay hopeful.”

She emphasizes that her story is also a reminder: to pay attention to your body, to speak up when something doesn’t feel right, and to get checked — even during pregnancy, when so many symptoms can blur together.

Timpf says she hopes sharing her experience will help other women catch potential problems earlier.

“If my sister hadn’t told me to get it looked at, I might have ignored it,” she says. “If my doctor hadn’t reacted the way she did, who knows how long it would have gone unnoticed.”

As she continues treatment, Timpf is focusing on her health and her family, expressing gratitude for the support system around her and the medical team guiding her through each phase. While the future holds challenges, she says the diagnosis has given her a sharper sense of purpose.

“I want to be here for my child for a long, long time,” she says. “That’s what keeps me going.”
