Melodee, a fourth-grader from Lompoc, was reported missing in early October after school officials noted her prolonged absence from an independent study program she had enrolled in during August. The Lompoc Unified School District escalated truancy concerns, eventually alerting law enforcement.
Her remains were found on December 6 in rural Wayne County, Utah, by two photographers exploring the area. An autopsy revealed the child had died from gunshot wounds to the head. FBI DNA analysis confirmed the identity.

Investigators uncovered compelling evidence linking Ashlee Buzzard to the crime, including an expended cartridge case and a live round of matching ammunition found in her home, a rented storage locker, and a rental car. The murder weapon remains unfound. Buzzard, who had been uncooperative throughout the probe, was under around-the-clock surveillance as teams collected physical, digital, and forensic evidence.
Neighbors in Vandenberg Village witnessed deputies taking Buzzard into custody early Tuesday. She is held without bail.
