Communities across Louth, Meath, Monaghan and Scotland have been left devastated after a fatal road collision on Saturday night claimed the lives of five young friends, all aged in their early twenties. Gardaí formally named the victims as Alan McCluskey, 23, from Drumconrath, Co. Meath; Chloe McGee, 23, and Shay Duffy, 21, both from Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan; Dylan Commins, 23, from Ardee, Co. Louth; and Chloe Hipson, 21, from Lanarkshire, Scotland.

A sixth person, who was also travelling in the Volkswagen Golf, survived the crash but sustained serious injuries and remained in hospital on Sunday night. Gardaí said the survivor’s condition was critical but stable.

The crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on a narrow, twisting stretch of road at Gibstown, on the old Ardee Road leading into Dundalk. Weather conditions at the time were described as extremely poor, with persistent heavy rain, strong winds, and slick road surfaces. Emergency services said visibility in the area was “significantly reduced,” complicating both driving conditions and rescue efforts.

First responders who arrived on the scene described it as among the most distressing collisions they had ever witnessed. Sources said emergency crews were “shocked and deeply shaken” by the scale of the tragedy. All five victims were pronounced dead by the time help arrived. Garda investigators and fire personnel worked under challenging conditions as they attempted to stabilise the wreckage and assist the sole survivor.

The group of six had met earlier that evening at Dooley’s Road House and Restaurant, a well-known local eatery situated between Carrickmacross and Ardee. The meeting point was a routine gathering spot for young people from surrounding towns. The friends had planned to travel into Dundalk together for a Saturday night out when the crash occurred along the 22km stretch of road separating the restaurant from their destination.

Shockwaves were felt immediately in the towns and villages the victims called home. Many residents learned the news through social media in the early hours of Sunday morning, and what began as rumours was confirmed by Gardaí before noon. Vigils and prayer gatherings were quickly organised at several churches in Ardee, Carrickmacross and Drumconrath, where devastated relatives and friends sought comfort.

Local parish priests in the affected areas said Masses on Sunday morning were marked by silence, tears, and disbelief. One priest described the atmosphere as “heartbroken and hollow,” noting that many parishioners knew either the victims or their families personally.

The victims were remembered as a close-knit group of friends with promising futures ahead of them. Alan McCluskey, 23, was described by neighbours as “polite, hardworking and full of life.” Chloe McGee, also 23, was said to have been “a bright light wherever she went,” while Shay Duffy, 21, was remembered as “a talented young man with a kind heart.” Dylan Commins, 23, from Ardee, was known for his gentle nature and love of sports. Chloe Hipson, 21, originally from Lanarkshire but living locally, had recently begun settling into Irish life and was remembered as “a lovely girl with a warm smile.”

Schools the victims had attended released statements of sorrow. One of the young people had recently worked as a woodwork and graphics teacher in Dundalk, where colleagues described him as gifted, patient, and well-liked by students. A school spokesperson said the staff was “struggling to comprehend such an unimaginable loss.”

Local councillors expressed condolences on behalf of the wider community, calling the tragedy “one of the darkest nights in Louth’s recent memory.” They praised the efforts of emergency service workers, who responded swiftly despite the dangerous weather, and urged road users to exercise caution as seasonal conditions worsen.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or travelled the road around the same time to come forward. They are particularly seeking dash-cam footage that might assist in reconstructing the events leading up to the collision. As of Sunday evening, investigations were ongoing.

For now, families across multiple counties—and across the Irish Sea—are preparing for the difficult days ahead as they face the unimaginable task of organising funerals for five young lives cut tragically short. Communities have vowed to support them in every way possible.

“This is a grief that spans towns, counties and borders,” one resident said. “It’s a heartbreak that will take a very long time to heal.”
