Murder Charge Filed in Disappearance of Louisiana Teen Despite No Body Being Found

Authorities in Baton Rouge have charged a man with first-degree murder in the disappearance of 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather, even though the teenager’s body has yet to be recovered.

Maurice Parms was arrested Saturday and accused in connection with the case that has gripped the Baton Rouge community for weeks. Minnieweather has been missing since early June, and search teams continue to comb areas for any sign of the teenager.

The arrest marks a significant development in the investigation, which has drawn widespread attention and emotional pleas from local officials and family members desperate for answers.

East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards delivered a strong message after the arrest.

“We will hunt you down. We will find you. Don’t fool with our babies in Baton Rouge,” Edwards said during a public statement.

Although no body has been discovered, legal experts say murder prosecutions without a victim’s remains are not unprecedented.

Defense attorney Franz Borghardt, who has handled criminal cases in Louisiana, explained that prosecutors can still secure convictions if they are able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime occurred and identify the person responsible.

“You still have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the person accused of a crime did it,” Borghardt said. “But it is not impossible to prove it, and in fact nationally and locally, we’ve had cases where people have been convicted of murder when there is no body.”

According to arrest documents, investigators gathered witness testimony and physical evidence that they believe supports the charge.

One witness reportedly told police they saw a “very tall black man” assaulting a smaller individual matching Minnieweather’s description on the night of June 4. Authorities believe the attacker was Parms.

During questioning, Parms allegedly told investigators that he briefly visited Minnieweather that night before returning home and remaining there until morning.

However, police say surveillance footage contradicted that account.

Investigators reportedly reviewed security video showing Parms riding what was described as a “small kid’s bike” away from the area. Authorities also discovered a large bloodstain at the scene, evidence prosecutors are expected to rely heavily upon.

Borghardt said both eyewitness testimony and forensic evidence can carry significant weight in court.

“If it’s reliable and credible, then we can draw conclusions from it,” he explained. “Based on the affidavit, it would seem that we have physical evidence in a place that it shouldn’t be. We also have direct evidence, someone saw something.”

Despite the arrest, the search for Ja’Derrius Minnieweather continues. Authorities have not disclosed where they believe the teenager’s body may be located, but search crews remain active as investigators work to piece together the final moments before his disappearance.

For Minnieweather’s family, the arrest provides some hope that justice may eventually be served, but the painful uncertainty remains.

Nearly three weeks after he vanished, loved ones are still waiting for the answer they want most — to bring the 15-year-old home.
